Fayetteville, N. U FRIDAY, NOV. 26. 1915. MOTHER. While editors and individuals have different convictions, see things from various angles in the political, finan cial and religious world, all have the same hopes, aspirations, pleasures and sorrows, hut when death take our loved ones,- humanity asserts itself aad our hearts go out to the bereaved, la the death of the mother of our friend and editorial brother, Mr. Thos. E. Owen, of the Clinton Dispatch, we must pause to pay our little tribute to the deceased, and xetend our deep eat sympathy to the motherless. It makes no difference whether he be child, or man, grown gray in the service of church and State, there is always an empty spare and an aching void in the heart of him who hath no mother, but there is a comfort in the knowledge that a!) things are done well, and if faithful to the end we will meet -her again. How sweet the words: Mother, Home and Huaven! OPPOSITION AT THE HEAD. John Sprunt Hill tells the Durham correspondent of The News and Ob server that from his conversation with delegates to the State Farmer?' Convention he gathered that the far mers were not opposed to reasonable preparedness. And we do not believe the majority of farmers are opposed to rt Presidents Barrett and Alexan der were, however, for various rea sons, and that really is about ail the opposition in the reinvention means Hickory Record. If two members of the Farmers' Union could push through the Dur ham convention a resolution that the majority was against it looks like the balance did but little thinking. Still this is but little worse than fre frequently happens in legislative bobdies one cr two leaders draw a bill and pass it before the majority find out what it contains. The farmers may all be against plans for American defense, but we .don't believe it. They may be hard headed and sometimes fail to do a? much thinking as they ought, but if you will go nut and tell them they are cowardly and unpatriotic we wi'.l guarantee y-u ar. interesting accasior . nine times o-jt of even. ten. ho's from Missouri' I tonoN GINNING. tolUR u many -nl couiiter ir.i.ufcl: marael one ot an.r Munuay's ginriir.g cross es to currents maice the i-tM KueafcWur. epult snowing nne-i to October 18 it t.ui.'ish estimates, ne iivt u.iaoioie la me averse for the otd-ouiieu toe n. The v Index has a general circulation in Cumberland ' and . all the surrounding counties. The two papers cover Fayetteville and the Cape Fear section like the dew of the morning, giving our advertisers three times as much circulation as an other paper in the Cape' Fear section, making the best advertising medium in the entire section. If you want to reach the people place your advertis ing in The Cape Fear News and the Fayetteville Index, the papers that have the cir culation and the readers. If you are from Missouri, ask to be shown. We make no statements that we can not back up and our list is not hidden, but can be seen and read. The combination offered by The Index and The News is unequalled as an advertis ing medium in this section. Try them if you want your advertising to pay. Mark your copy for both papers and send it to this office by noon the day before it is to appear. The News is published every morning except Mon day and copy ought to be in the office at noon of the previous day. The Index copy bhould be in the office not later than Monday to insure publica tion. We want to publish The Index Tuesday evening 1 and if our advertisers will 1 remember this and send in 1 their copy they will get bet ter service as well as do us a favor. It will help the read er to get his paper on time, give the advertiser better service and be an advantage to us. We haven't a man to go after the advertising every time, so please mark ..amount of space, number of times the ad. is to appear and send it early so that w-e will have time to set it up. Remember that the News is the only paper delivered in Fayetteville early Sunday advertising Saturday morn ing for Sunday's News. It morning and arrange your will pay you to do so. Whedbee, pre ; siding at the Cumberland County Su !perior Court, criminal term, Novem j ber 22 115. The grun.; jury beg leave to make the following reports: We have examined into 12 present ments and found 11 true bill bills and returned one for lack of witnesses. A committee appointed to visit the County Home, the convict ramp, the county jail, and the different county offices reports as follows: The County Home, The County Home is in good condi tion except some of the walls, which need to I repaired. The Home hus 21 inmates, who are satisfied with the fare. Everything is clean and sanitary around the Home. The Convict Camp, about six miles west of Fayetteville, in Seventy-first township, on -he Yadkin road, is in a satisfactory con dition. There are 25 prisoners in the camp. County Office. The county offices .are in excellent condition; the Treasurer's office needs a large fire proof safe in which to keep papers and books and we recom mend that one be purchased for this purpose. The furniture in the clerk's office is old and inadequate and we"recom mend that a center desk and a roller cabinet with space for books in lower part be purchased for this office. The basement in which old books and papers are kept is in good condi tion. , County Jail. One outside door, of the county jail has been damaged by the prisoners and the levers operating the corridor doors are rusty and worn to such an extent that they will not open said doors. Me recommend that the neces sary repairs be made at once. Also that the broken glass in the Window s be replaced with hew ones. The pris oners are well fed and the jail is in a sanitary condition. Seventeen magistrates have made their report; also the sheriff and his deputies. A number of the magis trates have failed to make report as required by law and others have made reports to the civil court. We there fore recommend that the clerk of the court publish the law. so that they may know their duty in this matter. This report was unanimously adapted. T. L. GIBSON', ' Foreman. V. B. M ALLOY Secretary. Mr. Root's bland admission that if he is given the Republican nomina tion for President he wil Iaccept, has stirred up the Progressives. If the Republicans should put Root in the field, there seems no ' way in which the Progressives could meet the is sue other than in the nomination of Colonel Roosevelt. The Democrats" would be very much gratified should such as ituation be' brought about. And yet, this is what is bound to happen, as The Observer sees the sit uation, unless one thing may be hro;JMH to pass. That would tie the onf -Med acreptahce of the nomination by A;. Hughes. He is the one man on ""-hom could come togethre and he i - the only man. The question is ht .-.her own persona! comfort and his ; individual interests aiiove mere party inteierts. The spirit of patriotism within him must be stirred very deep . !y to induce him to abandon the ek-;alte-i position he now holds for the doui.Uul proposition of putting his J popularity, against the popularity of j President Wilson to a test before thil ' people.
