" The Chicago Stars womsn's-base ball team defeated a junior team of . Fayetteville on the diamond here In a five Innings game by. a score of 16 to 6. There were two men and seven women on the Chicago team, which played fairly good ball and behaved themselves with much more propriety than was expected. About two hnn dred people witnessed the game. Bobnoa Counlj Coavastlta. Robeson County Democratic Conven tion met at Lumberton Thursday and made the following nominations : For Senate, Capt. Tom McBrjde; for the House, George H. Hall and E. J. Brittj Clerk of Superior Court, W. H. Humphrey; Sheriff, Q. B McLsod; Register of Deeds, J. N. Buie; Treas urer, T. Kinglaw; Coroner, R. S. Bond, County Commissioners, A. R. McEach ern, E. C. Nye, J. Porter, who recently ten dered his resignation as pastor of the First Baptist church, to enter the evan gelistic field, returned home Thursday from Mt. Olive, where he has just con cluded a very successful meeting. Mr. Porter, who now oc:uples the parsonage, says that he will make Fayetteville his home if he can secure a house, but that he Is experiencing much difficulty In renting one. There never was a time, possible, in the history of Fayetteville, when so few houses were vacant, with so many new ones constantly being erected. This Is one of the best signs of a towns growth. Bear and Whisker in I;oar larrtls. The Wilmington Dispatch of Thurs day afternoon says: Mr. Wi'liam L Tharp, a well known painter of this eity, received a letter from Dana, N. C, dated August 29:b, warning bim against something ot wbieb be ia in absolute ignorance. The party writing the letter signed himself as a friend. From the eontents of the letter it would seem that some man in Wilmington is chipping beer and whis key to Dnon, Fayetteville and Wilson in dour barrels, and it is presumed is doing the business under tbe name of Mr. Tharp. Tbe writer says tbe secret service men are "on to him" aud if any more is shipped to those places it will be seized and lead to the capture of tbe still. Of eoorse tbe letter was a big for prise to Mr. Tbarp and if anybody u KUilty of the illicit wbUky distilling referred to it is some one else, and tbe warning reaobed tbe wrong party. The Indtttndtnt la Polities Rev. P. R. Law in the Robeson lan of last week says : Organization is the natural result ant of intelligent progress and ctvill zatioa. The best result in quality and quantity are accomplished by It buc cess in all directions await it. Nature furnishes the prototype. The farmer is doomed to failure in advance who disregard it. Without it a railroad could not be run unless it be into bankruptcy. All business requires it. In church work great success may not come with it but nothing can be achieved without It. In politics there is no exception. Wben a people would eflect a change In tbe existing admin istratlon or perpetuate a wise and sat isfactory regime sgainst the scheming and self-seeking politician they must organize if they wonld succeed. And organization means self denial. The individual cannot expect to get the or ganlzation iormulated entirely after bis liking. To Insist upon It Is to an tagonlze the Institution and the good end aimed at. Tbe independent is sn impracticable sort of character or by bis position Is the 'embodiment of a aelf-seeking man who first and last is after an office for himself or for others. f ayeiurllle Wsataa Ilopet with a Itgr. Ojo4 Iaa4s Ojb ef tbs evidences of the good roads movement now in progress in Cumbsrlacd county, under tbe dura tion of Capt. A. B. Williams, chairman of the board of county commissioners, will soon be apparent in tbe increase of cotton marketed in Fayetteville this season, and, when tbe roads north ssd east are made as good as the loads letding tooth and west, next season we predict, will sbow an astounding in crease. This will, of course, apply to all other products, especially truck, tbe raising of which the good roads will inerease, but we specify cotton, because tbe inerease can be more easily detect ed. An ezebacge eays cf tbe farmers and good roads : In all states that have given state sid for roads, tbe farmers at first opposed it, but at tbe present time they are londest in their demands for improve ment ot the roads, as they appreciate that tbey are really benefited the aoet beeanse they are continually using tbe road in baoling their products to market, which tbey can do at all tea sens of the year over a good road.
