Bus ell challenged Miss Mary C. Darby, Wilmington's postmaster, to prove that tbe bad paid bis expenses to Washing ton. This afternoon Miis Duby, in answer to tbe challenge, showed tbe following letter, in the former Gover nor's own handwriting: 'Miss Man: I will go to Washing ton Thursday night. McQieen, and with great regret it announces today that a tele gram was received the next morning by Mr. A. 8. Huske, to tbe effect tbat she "died peacefully at 3.30 o'clock this morning." Mrs. McQieen was, as stated yes terday, the eldest daughter ot the late Avon E. Hall and Agnes his wife, daughter ot the lata Wm. Bell. She was born on Haymonnt, and the writer knew her well through all tbe bright life of her sweet obildbood and grace ful girlhood. It is but natural tbat snob promise ripened into a noble, christian womanhood, and that ber death his sorely wrung the hearts of many devoted friends. C Mi Quibd, who departed this life at 3:30 'lDorsday morning, took plaoe yesterday forenoon at 11 o'clock at tbe First Presbyterian church. It was an extremely sad occasion, and there was in attendance a great tbroDg ot bereaved relatives and sorrowing friends to pay tribute of love and re spect to the memory ot her who has entered into rest. "The services were impressively condoated by the pastor, Rev. Dr. J. M. Wells, and at the oonciusion tbe remains were followed in grief to Oik dale cemetery, where they were coo signed to earth. The loss is es timated at $1,000 in several barrels of wbiikey and damage to bottle goods. The condition of tbe Allegheny river above Pittsburg ia very threatening. The ice is gorged at intervals for a dis tance of fifty miles, and serious dam age is feared when warmer weather comes. J. R. McCrary, administrator ot S.B. Davis, bas entered snit in tbe Superior Court of Davidson county for $40,000 damages against the Bootbarn Railway Company, Davis, who was an engineer on tbe road, having been killed in a wreck near Lexington last April. C. W. 8mitb. of York Institute, Alexander county, met a horrible death 'esterdayioa very peculiar manner. He and a Mr. Beam were out in the woods chopping.
