H., 49 ac Watsonr 3 76 Womble, N. Y., i5oac.Shawld.,a 09 The following fects and figures of the extent, population, wealth and business of San Francisco, ' which earthquake and fire have combined to almost blot out of existence, , will be of interest to the readers of the Observer: It covers an area equal to nearly miles square, being 46 square miles in extent, and ranks ninth among the large cities of the United States, hav ing a population of 450,000. Its ag gregate assessed value of all property is $524,224,566, against which it car ries a debt of $4,228,327. It has 35 banks 9 savings banks, with aggre gate resources of $166,466,773, and 26 commercial banks, with resources of $117,500,000. The Richmond Times-Dispatch re cords that its exports by sea three years ago were estimated at $55,000,' 000; that it is the greatest ship-build ing port on the Pacific Ocean, and that it ranks first among the cities ot the world in the use of the telephone, having one for every 16 inhabitants. San Francisco was founded about the year 1849 or 1850, on the occasion of the Pacific Coast gold fever, which carried to California thousands of fortune-seekers from the east It was an irregular, straggling collection of shanties and tents, the centre of a strange, bizarre "boom," where enor mous prices prevailed for labor, the necessaries and luxuries of life; in fact, for everything. For many years afterwards it was a badly-built town, its houses mostly constructed of wood; but the modern San Francis co is, or was, one of the world's most! splendid cities. It will be pleasant and interesting to younger Fayette ville readers to recall just here that Col. J. B. Starr, a prominent citizen of the city; and Mr. G. W. Lawrence, proprietor of "Happy Valley Vine yard," knew San Francisco in its pi- oneer shanty days, as they were among the old-time 'Forty-Niners" who flocked to the Gold Coast. The climate of San Francisco and its surrounding country is ideal, the temperature from one season to ano ther varying only about 10 or 12 de grees. Snowstorms are practically unknown, there being but one re corded in its history of more than 56 years, when, about 25 years ago, snow fell to the depth of three inches. The greatest earthquake disasters recorded in history are as follows: Canton, China, in 1731, 100,000 peo ple killed; Lisbon, Portugal, 1755, 60,000 killed; Knehan, Persia, 1755, 40,000 killed; Krakatao, Straits of Sunda, 1883, 36,000 killed; Caleaia, Poland, 1268, 20,000 killed; Calicia, Italy, 1867, 10,000 killed; Island of Hondu, Japan, 1891, 10,000 killed; Venezuela, 1894, 3,000 killed. In the earthquake at Charleston, S. C, August 31st 1886, there was a loss of 38 lives, with great destine Hon of property. This seismic dis turbance extended up the Atlantic coast, in less degree than at Charles ton, clear to the Middle States. Ik There is One " Soda Cracker andj.Only I One.
