Rose, city physician, for October, "shows a total of 14 deaths for that month 11 whites and 3 colored. Two whites died of gastritis : one each of consumption, paralysis, morasmus, .suicide, typhoid fever, diphtheria, '.- general debility, brain disease, heart disease. Of the colored, one died of consumption, one of bronchitis and one was ; burned to death. Four of the whites were under 5 years of age. Mr. W. H. Powell has purchased three tenement houses on Kennedy street, two of McMillan Bros, and one ofMr. E. I. Clark. - - ; A dispatch from Burlington to the News and Observer of Saturday says: A negro barber named Crater was in Mr. Will Holt's office this mom . ing. Mr. Holt asked him about some remarks he had been making about the trial in progress at Graham, be ing in the nature of threats against some of the witnesses. He answered Mr. Holt very insolently, whereupon Mr. Holt knocked him down. When he got np he made at Mr. Holt with a razor. Mr. Holt drew a revolver and shot at him. Bnt for the interfer ence of his brother, Mr. H. L Holt, he would have killed him. The ne gro ran down stairs and while doing so lost four dollars and three or four razors. Hall, in passing by there Fri day, saw a drunken man or two com ing out of the stall or standing around it He asked the proprietor about the matter, and he replied that the parties who had been frequently seen to come out of his place drunk came into his place drunk. The place had, such an odor about it of intoxicants, however, that Dr. Hall went to Mr. C J. Cooper, a member of the Public Works Commission, and the latter at once gave notice to the "Black Brew" man to vacate by to-morrow night, as he said he required that length of time to sell the three bar rels he had oa hand. I Mr. B ma 11 ilJ.ur. Mr. Samuel J. Cny, a well known qtuea and farmer of Seventy-first, died last Friday after a long illnes. He was in the 77th year of his age. Mr. Guy was a soldier in the Con federate army, a member of Co. I, Fifty-first N. C, Freeman's brigade. For a number of years he was Deputy Sheriff under the late Sheriff Neill McQueen. He was a member of Phcenix Lodge of Masons, this city,- and a deacon in ML Gilead Baptist church. He was twice married, his first wife being a Miss Buie, sister of John B Buie ; and hi second was Miss Carter, sister of Mr. Dan Carter. The following children survive him: Mrs. Edward Herring, of Sampson county: Mrs. Blakely Jackson," of 71st; and Misses Katie, Lillif, Effie and Lizzie; and Messrs.
