A. fund, Machpelah, N. a MONUMENT AT MOORE'S CREEK ' . Unveiled To-Day. Special to Observer. Moore's Creek. Aug. 15. A splendid monument to the heroic women of the Revolution was unveiled here to-day. Rev. A. D. McClure opened the exer cises with prayer. The monument was formally presented by B. H. Hawea, Jr., and was accepted in a graceful speech by Mr, 'j. F. Moore, president of the Monument Association. - The monument waa then unveiled by Miss Lillian Colvln and Miss Kate Bonneman In the presence of a very large crowd of cheering people. The handsome shaft was then decorated by thirteen young ladles, representing the thirteen original States. Hon. Charles R. Thorn a is now de livering the address of the occasion. Wrecks on the Southern Yesterday. Passenger train No. 8, of the South ern Railway, which left Ashevllle yes terday morning for Lake Toxaway waa derailed at Selica, four miles beyond Brevard. All the cars were overturn ed and went down a small embank ment -with the result that 13 persons were Injured though not seriously. The wreck Is said to have been caus ed by spreading rails, cile Kingsbury, of Wilmington, N. C; die Wlngsbury, of Wilmington, N. C; Mrs. Walter Bear, Poplar, N. C; Mrs. H. L. Shaw, Fountain, N. C; W. As the result of the block' station operator giving north-bound passen ger train No. 8 on the Southern Rail way a clear track at Reidsvllle, N. C early yesterday the train while going at full speed, ran Into the rear end of north-bound freight No. 8 at Saddler, N. C, resulting in serious Injury to engineer Pleree of the passenger trala and slight Injury to nine passengers. ' ' The injured passengers, according to the list given out by the Southern Railway officials, are: W. G. Stafford, Mrs. W. G. Stafford, Miss Stafford. Mrs. L. A. Sears, K. a Shaman, of Salisbury, N. C; Miss Peart Flentoff, Mrs. Lee Bevffl. Mrs. N. Ingram, and Mrs. D. D. Darraway. The places of residence of the injured passengers was not obtainable. A Good On on th Preacher. A prominent minister, who arrived here a tew days ago, tells a good Joke on himself: "Do I look like a preacher, he asa ed. When told that he was not too in dress, and lacked the conventional well-fed looking, a little too dudtsh long face, he laughed and said: ''Well a certain cltlsen of the town evidently saw nothing about me to lead him to believe I waa a preacher, or he waa either a very Impudent fellow, for as I alighted from the train yesterday and was walking up the platform to look after my baggage, a stranger accosted me, shook hands, as It I was an old friend, and joined me in my walk. When we reached the baggage room, be held out his hand to tell me good bye, remarking confidentially at the same time, that if he could be of service to me while In Fayetteville not to fall to let him know, especially II l waa in need of whisky or beer. Several weeks ago the Observer recorded th fact that th Virginia Carolina Southern had received to convicts to aid in (he construction of Its road from Lumberton to Fayette ville. We thought, of course, that they were obtained direct' from th 8tate. Th Lumberton Robesonlan In a long editorial throws a new light on th subject.,...- v Says the Robesonlan: The Virlngla at Carolina Southern Railroad la the road now being built from Lumberton to Hope .Mills. Mr. J. F. L. Armfleld, o( Fayetteville, Is president of the road. Mr. John Blue, of Aberdeen, first vice-president, and Mr. N. C. Blue, also of Aberdeen, Is general manager. Nine miles of this road have already been laid from Lum berton towards Hope Mills, snd .18 miles have been graded. The road will connect with the Atlantic Coast Line at Hope Mills, and the Intention is to later extend the road from Hope Mills to Fayetteville. "Mr. Armfleld, president of the road, went to Raleigh in January for the purpose of hiring convicts from the penitentiary authorities. He saw Mr. J. S. Mann, superintendent of the peni tentiary, and offered to pay the pre vailing price, $1.50 per day, for con victs, and he urged Mr. Mann to furnish him such convicts as could be spared and were not contracted tor elsewhere. It blew down Freet Bryant's wagon shelter snd wrecked his stable, and It blew down some "phone poles and broke and tangled the corn badly. Tax Listing in Cumberland. It fen my lot to be one of th as sessors this year. The first place we met was at Hair's store. The people had heard that property would he as sessed higher and they came prepar ed to meet us. snd ten us that their land was taxed all tt would bear. We moved it up a little, and there was grumbling done. The next two days we showed up at Cedar Creek. The boys had heard what we did at Hair's store and some of them were kinder ashy when they came, we did the best we could for the boys but we left some of them kinder sshy. - Vr :'?":' v".".::' ' ": The next time we showed at Bed sole school house the boys down there seemed to be In good humor and I think we left them pleased The next two days we showed st Stedmaa. Some of the boys down there kicked pretty bad and we got away as easy ss poslble. The next place we went to was Max well Mill. Some of the boys over there kicked very hard. We got away as easy ss we could. , The next place we assessed st wss Vender. Some of the boys over there kicked pretty hard. " ' The last place we met wss at Judson. The boys kicked very lightly there. I must say that the good women at all these placed did treat as kindly, and we fared sumptuously. We thank the good women. Mr. Ed Sessoms and Mr. Jas Cash- well had the best looking corn we saw on our route; the cotton crops were generally sorry. Bine. took the matter up with Mr. Mann, stating that he was very anxious to hire some convicts, if possible, for some public railroad work In this sec tion. Mr. Mann asked at once If It was the same railroad about which Mr. Armfleld had been to see him. snd when CoL McLean replied that it was Mr. Mann Immediately said that it waa impossible to get them, that al! the convicts bad been contracted for. Mr.; Mann' said that It wss impossible to break the contracts already mad CoL McLean then went to Governor Glenn and called the matter to his at tention. , ."About tea dayi ago convicts to the number of SO were obtained and they are now at work on the. Virginia A Carolina - Southern, ' but, mark you, these convicts were not obtained from the officials of th State prison; they were obtained through non-resident contractors Florida contractors who charged this railroad IS per cent ad vance on what they pay the State; tn other words, these non-resident con tractors get the convicts from the 8tate the State furnishing guards, clothing and, food for $L50 per day, and for these same convicts the Vlg glnla A Carolina Southern Railroad, which is being built by home capital and which will mean much to this sec tion, must pay these non-resident con tractors $1.72 per day, at a total profit of 300 per month for the con tractors.
