At Hie December meeting of the Cumberland County Medical Society, told Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 10th, in the court-bouse, officers for the ensu ing term were elected: President, Dr. 3. Vance McGougan, Fayetterille; Tlce-presldent, Dr. T. C. Ballard. Antry. Tllle; secretary and treasurer. Dr. Wm. 8. Jordan, Fayettevllle. Death of Mrs. Schuyler. She was the daughter of Mr. El G. de Fontaine, of . South' Carolina, and who, many years ago, was wet known In Fayette rllle. He was war correspondent of the Charleston Courier, author of The Best Works of Charles Dickens," pub lished by E. 3, Hale k Sons' and was a writer of great repute. f Many friends here will remember that Mrs. Schuyler spent' several months in Fayettevllle two years ago. PENSIONS FOR CUMBERLAND VETERANS... Increase this Year of Nearly Three : Thousand Dollars. The State pensions for Confederate soldiers for Cumberland county this year amounts to $7,870.00, divided as follows: Two 1st class at $72 each. . . .$ 144.00 Nine 2nd class at $60 each. . . 540.00 Seven 3rd class at $48 each 336.00 One hundred and ninety 4th class at $25 each.... 4.750.00 Eighty-four widows at $25 each ... 2400. $7,870.00 This Is an Increase of $2,293.00 over last year. This does not include the county pensions, which It is estimated will produce about $750.00 wbjcb can not he distributed until early spring after the sheriff settles. The warrant for State pensions will he ready for distribution on Saturday morning next (Dec 14.), and Major McKethan, the Clerk of the Court, will he glad if those entitled to warrants will apply at once for same. The county pensions will be divided among those now on list, and therefore no need of new applications being filed. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR FAY ETTEVILLE. Dear Mrs. Hale: Ton win recall that the Legislature provided a fund of $5,000 for purchas ing a 8 liver Service for the Battleship North Carolina. The committee hav ing the matter in charge find that this amount will be quite inadequate to pur chase an elaborate service. We have decided to raise an additional $5,000, and appeal to yon to help us. We have elected thirty towns in .the State and have appointed a lady. in each to raise funds in that locality by a gift, c cert, or other means. TJpon receipt of not less than $150, we will have the name of your town engraved on some handsome piece of 'the service. Onr committee asks that you undertake the work in your 'city.
