irjTiizcurinioitcouirr HOWELL COT A YEAR FOR EACH WIFE. From Wednesday' Dally. , Among tbe most Interesting case trloc'at this term I that of State va. Albert liales, a young colored boy about 15 years old from the east of the fiver, charged with shooting one Oliver Car ter. , v , ... ; - The defense was that Albert and two other boys went bunting one night in early November and the dogs struck a trail and ran for nearly a mile and when the boys came np the dogs were barking furiously and the boys think ing it was a bear, Albert shot In the direction where the bushes were shak ing and the three Imagining that : 4ar" or some "varmint" was after them ran for home. Oliver It seems was sitting or lying behind a log and the shot entered the right arm be- ' tween elbow and shoulder and part entered the log. The trial commenced yesterday and ended today in a verdict of "not gull ty " the Jury deliberating only Ave minutes. A very simple relation of the trial and its Incidents Is to be found In the following poem written by Mr. Cnaj. G. Rose, a member of the bar during the progress of the trial To under stand its references It is as well to state that some of the witnesses testi fied that certain bushes were known as - "Hurrah'' bushes, and that a gum tree was one of the exhibits of the trial "In far away Cedar Creek. ' Where the "Hurrah bushes grow, Three coons went out a fourth to seek, In the moon-light's pleasant glow. 1 The dogs they barked and the doKS - they bayed, , By a log la the edge of the wood. And the "Hurrah" bushes shook and swayed. Near where the gum tree stood. "The boys were sure 'twas a TedJy Bear And fired at It their load. Then trembling with fright and shak ing with fear, Took "leg bail" down the road. "The bear turned out to be a coon, With two legs Instead of four. And Into court the case came soon, .Which gave "She-p" a chance to 'roar.'" Prom Thursday's Daily. A Number of Cases Disposed Of. An Exciting 8port Wild cattle in Cumberland and a hundred bead or more! , It's bard to believe, Isn't It? But It's so, never theless. The writer was much astonished, as the reader will be, to leant that for the past several days a hunt for wild cattle, more dangerous and exciting (because not made to order) than Teddy's hunt for canned Hons, ele phants, etc, In the African woods, has been in progress within tea miles of Fayettevllle. - A number of years ago Mai J. B. Broad foot Corned several cows loose on a stretch of land he owns between Carver's Creek and Cross Creok. There they have been ever since, mul tiplying and growing wilder with each generation, until .now the herd num bers fully one hundred, all wild as sebras. These animals ranged tor a dis tance of seven miles between two creeks, and along their banks ten or twelve miles. Finding It almost impossible to catch any of them and hearing th.it certain parties were hunting, them with rifles, MaJ. Broadfoot decided to take a hand In the matter himself, and enlisted the services of Mr. J. A. Rat cliffs, one of the crack rifle shots of the F. I. L. I So for the past several days, accompanied by a pilot, a man in the neighborhood, who knows the wild cattle and their range. Mr. Ratcliffe has been having more real sport than Mr. Roosevelt Is having in Africa. So tar he has been able to get within rifle range of six of the ntni and he has brought them all to the grount One of them a great bull, after being1 shot twice, made a dash for Mr. Rat cliffe and It took three more bullets In the head before the animal dropped at the hunter's feet The pilot, Sam Elliott estimates the number of these wild nimf at one hundred, having himself seen as mauy as seventy-live different ones. Mr. Ratcliffe will continue his ex citing hunt nntll he has bagged the whole outfit FOR BETTERMENT OF SHOOL MOUSES. Prize Contest Closes Sept 1.
