Johnson waa placed on trial yesterday afternoon, charged with re tailing, with the following Jury: W. O. Dean, W, 8. Hales, W. J. Robinson, Jr, W. H. Williams, A, N. McLaucb, lin, 3. L. Alpine. B. T, Bitter, O. Will Urns, H. McP. Ray, Carl Godwin, G. fl. Riley, A. L. Sexton. ' ' . When court adjourned yesterday af ternoon, the attorneys were about half through their argument When court met this morning, and argument was about to be resumed, the defendant was missing, his bond of $200 was de clared forfeited, a ; Juror was with drawn, and a mistrial ordered. Will 8haw, assault with deadly wea pon, plead guilty, and Judgment was suspended on payment of costs. X. 8. Allen, violation of probihltion law; case being beard now. Ashworth, the young engineer ' on the Raleigh A South port, who shot and killed young Daniel Jones at the B. ft 8. depot here Bunday night, which .the coroner's Jury declared accidental, but which was la ter taken up by the Mayor, -who bound Ashworth over to court, the Grand Jury of which found a true bill aglnst hint for manslaughter, was continued to November . term, the defendant's bond being fixed at (300. Mr. T: Blaine Cashwefl and Miss Carrie Jackson were married Wednes day at the residence. of Mr. J. B. Jackson, father of the bride. The young couple are very popular and be long to the best families of the eait side of the Cape Pear, and start out la life with bright prospects, and the best wishes of their many friends. Rev. W. In yesterday afternoon's Observer brief mention was made of the death of Mrs. Mary M. Harrlss, which oc curred shortly after three o'clock, at the resldense of her sister. Mrs. J. W, MacKethan, on Cool Spring street Mrs. Harrlss was a remarkable wo man in s great many respects. . ' At the time of her death, 'she -was 0 years of age, and yet she' was in the possession of s splendid Intellect, sod s fund of most valuable information dating back to the Revolution, stories of which she had gathered from herl grand parents, every detail of which she kept fresh is her memory. She was s charming conversationalist a most lovable woman, highly cultured. sod s christian in every sense of the word. The deceased wss a grand daughter of CoL Thomas Robeson, for whom Robeson county was named, and of James Gillespie, of Bladen, one of the earliest Congressmen from this section. She was born and reared In Bladen county, and was the daughter of John A. and Eliza S. Robeson. , In 1850 the deceased married M. T. Har ris, a prominent merchant of Wil mington, N. C, who died In 1872. Mrs. Harrlss is survived by s brother, Dar ld G. Robeson, of Red Springs, N. C, and a sister, Mrs. EL T. MacKethan, of Fayettevllle; by four nephews, B. It, Dr. J. A. and Lieutenant A. A. Mac Kethan, IT. S. N, all of-Fayettevllle, and Dr. David G. Luther, a prominent farmer In Seventy-First this morning, when Miss Mary E. Lu ther, a charming and very accomplish ed young woman, and daughter of the bouse, was united In marriage to Mr. a W. Meacham. of Raleigh, Rev. L. E. Thompson, pastor of Hay Street church, performing the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Meacham have the best wish es of- the 'Observer for a long and happy life. Death of Mrs. Janie McLean 8mlth. From Thursday's. Daily. ; It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Janie Mc Lean Smith, which occurred at the family residence on Rowan street last night Mrs. Smith who was seventy- two years of age, was a splendid chris tian woman, and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. -. Mrs. Smith waa born in Fayettevilte, and in early life married James R Smith, Esq, who died a number e-f years ago. - . The deceased is survived by the fol lowing children: : Messrs. Warren, J, and Paul McLean' Smith, of Athens, Ga Mrs. Florence at Myers, of New Tork; and Miss Janie N. Smith, of Fayetteville. The funeral win take place from St John's church tomorrow afternoon at 5 o'clock. .'. . -: OBITUARY. " Entered into rest on Thursday morn ing. September second, at her home i Fayetteville, N.
