towards the new method before and af
ter trying, we will quote a farmer who
spoke at a public meeting in Alabama
last year: --r. ...y -
"I was born in a cotton field, and
have worked cotton on my farm for
more than 40 years. I thought no one
could tell me anything about raising
cotton. I have usually raised one-half
bale on my thin soli, and 1 thought
there was all the cotton there waa in
it lor one season. , The demonstration
agent came along and wanted me to
try his plan on two acres. Not to be
contrary, I agreed, but did not believe
what he told me. However, I tried my
best to do as he said, and at the end of
the year I had a bale and a half to the
acre on the two acres worked his war.
and a little over a third of a bale on
the land worked my way. Yon could
have knocked me down with a feather.
This year I have a bale and a half to
the here on my whole farm. If you do
not neiieve it, 1 invite you. to go down
and see. Yes sir as a good cotton
planter I am Just one year old."
In speaking of this work, Dr. Knapp
saya that his success lies In going di
rectly to the farmer and getting him
to do the work on his own farm.' That
is, the farmer takes the medicine him.
self rather than having some one In
a distant state Uke it for him.
X The Effect on The Farmer,
The effect on the farmer is some.
thing Uke this:
He has been growing practically ail
cotton and receiving regular advances
from the merchants. A regular rule
01 cultivation has been followed since
the cotton Industry was started in his
neighborhood. The moment he ham
j that there Is a greater profit In grow
ing couou nnaer a new method, he be.
gins to Inquire Into other things. "Why
not raise more corn and vegeUbles for
the family and fodder for the stock,
that la produce the food supplies for
iue iamny ana stock as far as possible
on the farmr. That wUl of course
reduce his cotton acreage, but what
cotton he does raise will be almost a
nei pronu He cannot expect to attain
tnis result in a single season but
11 is surprising now few years it . wlU
taxe to put mm in this position. At
nrsi, were might be some objection to
this On the nart nf ttia
but If they will Inrestlgate closely
they will nnd that the gradual growth
of a' cash system is for tne benefit of
an paroes. Tne principle has been
suted In an article prepared by Dr.
Knapp entitled, "A Common Economic
Error," which should be read by every
farmer as weU as every merchant
Dr. Knapp Is a great defender -of the
one-norse ttrmer of the South, con
tending that for the amount he earns
he donates more to charity and public
utility than any other class of people
In tne United SUtes. The moment that
nia net income is increased he Immed
iately begins to make ImprovemenU,
build better houses, better fences, bet
ter roads, more schools and more
cnurcnes, thus putting rural life upon
a higher plane. If a single man in a
community can grow a better crop,
he will be a better man and in his
work for the rural upUft the man wUl
grow raster than the crop. .
The fundamental Drinclnlm : taM
down by Dr. Knapp in his system of
cultivation lor southern farms are as
follows: " . -... .
(1). Prepare a deep and thoroughly
imiveriwu seea neu, wen drained;
break In the fall to the denth of 8. 10
or a incnes, according to the soil, with
iBHiiemenia mat wm not bring too
uiuuu m me budso 1 . to thA unrfiu
(The foregoing depths should be reduc
ed gradually).
(2). Use seed of the best variety,
Inteligently selected . and earefuiiv
stored. - .
(3). In cultivated crona sire tha
rows ana me pianu in the rows a
space suited to the plant, the aolL
and the climate. v "
(4). Use Intensive tllUo-a rinrin.
the growing period of the crops.
(5). . Secure a high content of hu
mus In the soli by the use of legumes,
barnyard manure, farm refuse, ami
Commercial fertilizers.
(6). Carry out a srstematln' rmn
routlon with a winter cover crop.
(7), Accomnllah mora a.1, in
day by using more horsepower and bet-
luiyieuienis.
(8). Increase the farm ativlr tn tfc.
01 uwizing au the waste prod'
ttcti tad lands cf the farm.
(10). Koep an acfoimt of each fnrm
product, lu orilur to' know from which
the gain or Iohs mium. ,
These prlnolplos ho hns applied with
remarkable success and has enormous
ly Increased the income of the farmers
In many SUtos.
When It was seen that the new sys
tem of culture was doubling the In
come of the farmer, there was a great
desire to extend It to the States east
of the MlBBlaslppI, but the bureau of
plant Industry was not authorized to
extend the work beyond the territory
Infested with the boll weevil, or just
In advance of It At this point Dr.
Knapp's great work attracted the at
tention of Dr. Wallace Buttrlck, secre
Ury of the general education board of
New York, who has millions of dollars
at bis command.
I had observed In my travels,' says
Dr. Buttrlck, "that the great obstacle
to progress in the South was the pov-.
erty of the farmer and aa I was con
stantly traveling through that section
I was depressed by the evidence every
where of the low earning power of
the farmer. It waa only about one
fourth of that In some of the Western
States, and according to aU the rules
of economics the scale of civilization
must necessarily be low in the South
while this condition ontlnued.. It so
happened that I was present at one of
the meetings in Texas when Dr. Knapp
delivered an address, and I became in
terested In his work. The more I learnt
ed of It, the more I saw In it, and when
I returned to New York I conferred
with Dr. Gates, chairman of the gen
eral education board, and we telegraph
ed Dr. Knapp to meet us at the Hotel
Wlllard, In Washington, that night.
We went down and Dr. Knapp dis
cussed the situation with us until 3
o'clock In the morning. The result was
that Dr. Gates and I had an interview
with Secretary Wilson the next morn
ing, and he told us plainly that al
though he fully appreciated the impor
tance of Dr. Knapp's work he had no
authority to extend it beyond the ter
ritory affected by the boll weevil. Dr.
Gates and I asked the secretary If he
could use money furnished by the gen
eral education board for the extension
of the work east of the Mississippi,
and he said that Dr. Knapp could di
rect the work, using our funds. So we
began, furnishing something over 18
000 the first year and increasing the
amount every year until we furnished
last year something over $100,000. I
look upon Dr. Knapp's work aa one of
the greateBt ever undertaken, not only
for agriculture, but for the advance
ment of civilization In the South."
Dr. Knapp has Introduced his meth
ods In Virginia with remarkable re-
suits. Mr. T; O. Sandy, of Burkvllle,
Va., state agent for the demonstration
work, reported that when it began In
that SUte in 1907, in counties south of
the James river, where tobacco was
the staple crop, farms had . deteriorat
ed In productive capacity and value un
til many of them were on the market
at from $5 to $8 per acre. Most of the
hay and corn for the work animals
was Imported. On some farms the
yield of corn per acre was from 6 to
10 bushels. Last year, on Mr. Sandy's
demonstration farm, the yield was 4
to 6 tons of hay, and 75 bushels of
corn to the acre; One of the demonstra-
tors raised 94 1-2 bushels of corn on
an acre, and the effect of these yields
was to increase the number of demon- ,
stratlon farms from 27 In 1907 to near
ly 1400 in 1908, and the importation
of hay was stopped ' Just as fast as
lands could be prepared and seeded to '
grass. Nearly all the lands about
Burkeville have doubled In value, and
some have advanced threefold since
the demonstration work was comenc
ed. As soon as the farmers found they
could produce hay and corn profitably .
they wanted to engage In dairying and
stock raising so as to use their Idle
lands. A creamery and an Ice plant
have-been built at Burkeville, with a
guarantee' pf a business which wlU
require one thousand cows, and three
creameries and many commercial dai
ries are being established in adjoining
counties.
Mr. Sandy' savs that It had hnan
thought that farming In Vlrxlnla could
not be made profitable, and many farm-
ers moved away, while others ceased
to make ImprovemenU. ' As soon as
they saw the demonstration work thev
commenced to Improve, and 11 farmers
in one section put hot-water heating
and sanitary closeU into their houses
the past season. v
Nineteen hundred and elaht was the
first year that demonstration work was
carried on in Georgia, v The work Is
under the direction of Mr. E. Gentry,
of Jonesboro, Ga., who Is a Georgian,
but has had considerable ernei-tanr in
the boll weevil infested section of Tex
as, with only a small portion of the
State being worked Intenslvniv a
fair beginning has been made. The
work In Georgia is not Umted to the
last year raised as hish as 100 bunhAis
of corn to the acre. There were cases
where fathers laughed at what their
boys were doing until they saw that
the boys were making twice as much
as they, w.hen they adopted the same
methods. - --
Dr. Knapp sums un the ohlnr.u r.
