Sami-sOX Fair. We are glad to lea,rn that the 'Sampsotf Fair was very successful.' The exhibi tion whs line In all respects, and the live stock, : especially, is fpokett of ad unexcelled by that of , any other exhibition throughout the State. Samp son vouuty can boast of some of the best farmers ' ia North Carolina, and their agricultural products always take high rank wherever displayed. As we barn, much to our regret, that the Cl'm "ton li,-porter has suspended, we would suggest that it would give us pleasure to publish the pre sidium list of the Clinton Fair. It would be a mat ter of interest not uiily to our subscribers in Samp son, count v, but also to those in the adjoining esjuiitied. - 1.v:pi:ovemkxts. Thornton's rcsMenee has Kvn .moved about 150 vards .north, and! has been entirely remodeled, repainted and otherwise im proved. s; that it is now a very desk-able resi dence. Mr. Thornton has cut down and sloped the. hill in his front, making there a very 1 tasteful boulevard, -enhancing the Table of his-, property, and rendering that part of liayniount beaikiful. FriKMiUM Cur. Capt. Luther R. Breec has shown us the silver, cup presented to his, 'boy baby," Edwin Ambrose Breece, by Mr. E. J. Lilly, Jr., with the name engraved thereon. This is the special premium offered by Mr. Lilly for the "finest boy baby under one year old," exhibited at the fair. The prize is very handsome and valua ble, beautifully carved and chased. We never had the pleasure of seeing Breece, J r., but Capt. Breece says he's a fine boy, and the t apt. looks like he ought to have a fine hoy; every body who saw him savR he is a very fine baby and Dr. HaiKh says he is one of the finest f all imaginable babies, and he ought to know. We wish Capt. Breece many fiue babies, anil a silver cup of plenty and a golden spoon of luck for each and every one of them. And We take occasion to wish the donor many fine babies in his time. " ' . '- . LockIs Creek Canal Co. A meeting of the President and Directors of the Lock's Creek Can d Co, was held, on Tuesday. The contractor, Col. T. W. Devane, is pushing on the work, - and the enterprise iu progreeting rapidly. The BEilGEii Family. Thia well-known troupe gave two performances here last week, playing, ou both occasions, to large and delighted aui i.nces. " The Bell nnging was creditahle, though we have seen and heard it executed with more skill ajid -precision hy other peiformera. MiiJs Anna Berger's cornet solo was inimitable, and she was rewarded by the hearty and long con tinued applause of her .hearers. But she carried trie house with her in aiuror of excited admiration, on the last evening, when she came upon the stage ia her role of character songs. -Miss Ettie Berger's performance in the crystal bells and staff bell-ringing was beautiful and artis tic,, which, combined with her lovely face and beautiful figure, insured her an enthusiastic recep tion whenever she made her appearance. Messrs. Berger and Thiele in the violin and flute solos showed themselves masters of their art and their instruments; and altogether, the Berger Fam ily offer a delightful musical entertainment.. But Mr. Sol. Smith Kussel, like Jno. G. Fierson with, the Treinaines, is the central figure in the pic ture;'without him, it is "Hamlet" with ITamlet left out. Asa caricaturist, he is facile, quick and skilful;- as a mimic his powers are ready remark able; and he perforins every character which, he assumes with -an e:;se, a readiness, and, withal, a lack of maniK'pism, which is very captivating. In his wonderful faculty of facial transformation, he is very little inferior to Burton Comparing Russell and Piersou, we would say that the former is the better actor; the latter decidedly the greater hum orist. - Kussell lacks Piersou's orginality; 1'ierson is wanting in Russell's unusual power of suiting is own individuality in a strange character.; We hope we 'will see and hear the Tremuiues and Bergers again. Death of a Pkomixkxt Citizen. We regret to announce,-iu another column, the death cf a well-known and esteemed citizen of Fayetteville, Mr. Jas. M. Williams, who expired at his residence, on Saturday night, after a sudden illness of only an hour or two. Mr. Williams health has, how ever, been delicate for some short time. He was actively engaged in business in this town fr many years previous to the war, and was partner in tbe ib iu of Starr &, Williams, Avlii.h firm built the splendid iron front store on Hay St., now owned and occupied by the large wholesale and retail house of E. J. Lilly t, Co. , Sir. Williams leaves a large family iu bereavement, to whom we tender our cordial sympathy! Fremivsi SmftTS. 'Messrs. Mcliae & Da'ui- gerln ld have received tlie set of fine shirts, tif en d by them as a special premium at the fair, and awarded to Mr. E. H. Evans. The measure was taken by Messrs. Meliaa & Daingcrueld, the order sent on, and they how have a set of beautiful shirts which they are ready to present to Mr. Evans. - , 1 -Pcm.ic Xotick.
