Staton; and J. E. Bane, made a raid this side of Saluda,, and cap: tured a 85-gallon still, all copper and in first-class shape for making moon shine whiskey. Also poured out 3,000 gallons of beer. .There was no one at the still at the time. WE BOW "DOUBLE." ; Miss Beatrice Cobb" of the Morgan ton News-Herald, who resents being called editress," although she is pro ducing one of the besr newspapers in the weekly realm and making the poky males of the old school open their eyes, by her progressiveness, comes forth with the following compli ment for which we make our most graceful bow: " 'The News'" is the new name that appears across the front page of what was formerly The Visitor, of Hender sonville. This is one of the first' chang es to be made in the paper under the ownership of Editor N. M . Hollowell. Mr. Hollowell' is one of the best all 'round weekly newspaper men in the western part of the state, and his friends of the press will watch with deep interest the progress the. News is bound . to make under his manage ment. . MISSES PEDEN ENTERTAIN Misses Eliza and Dixon Peden en tertained on Friday evening, Decem ber 28, in honor of their cousins who are their gusts, Miss. Anna Belle Goodwin and Mr. Bertran Goodwin. The other guests were Misses Helen, Ruth and . Bess Child, Margaret Bailey, Margaret Justus, Alice and Lena Latham', Mrs., Child and Mrs. Alexander, Frank Bland, Will Hodges, Harry Sample, Ben Williams and Allan Rhodes. Miss Goodwin delightfully enter tained with piano " selections. Many games were enjoyed, one was a con test. Refreshments were served by, Misses Peden at the , close of the eve - ning's festivities, which consisted of ice cream and cake. The house was beautiful with the usual Christmas decorations. DINNER PARTY The dinner party given by Mr. and Mrs. J. Mack Rhodes, on Tuesday evening, December 24, was a delight ful social affair. Holly and Christ mas bells were used for the decora tions. Covers were laid for twelve guests which included the following: Misses Gladys and Louise ""Hodges, Alice and Lena Latham, Bess and Helen Child and Ruth Wooten. Later in the evening there was an un expected visit from" several young men. Music and games added to the evening's pleasures. Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes are constantly sharing their hospitality with their friends and know how to give them a good time. Mrs. George Valentine has re turned from New York where she visited her sister. Brooks. o Mrs. J. F. Brooks entertained the members of the choir from the First Baptist church last Thursday eve- 'ning. O On Tuesday afternoon, December 24, Margaret Kevohan entertained her little friends by giving them a Christmas tree at her home. o The dance given by Mrs. E. H. Allison at her home on Fifth avenue. Tuesday evening, December 24, was one of the largest social events of the season. The guests numbered about 150 and wore evening cos tumes. The decorations were appro priate to the season. Punch. cak and mints were served throughou the evening. o Misses Eliza and Dixon Peden have as their guests their cousins, Mr. and Miss Goodwin from Arkansas. o Nat Walker, formerly with Mc Clellan's 5. 10 and 25c store arrived in New York from France not long ago. C, arrived ' on Saturdav for a visit to his mother and other relatives. o H. H. Ewbank, traveling salesman for Park-Davis Drug Co., is spending the holidays with his family on Fourth avenue. Willie Laws from Orange City, Fla., is spending the holidays with his mother on Fifth Avenue. 0 . Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Razook have gone to St. Augustine, Fla., and will 0pen an oriental shop similar to the one they had here, 0 Misses Lily and Jessine Brooks are visiting near Charleston, S. C. 0 Glenard Harris entertained quite a number of hig friendg wUh a rook party one evening recently. o I Migg Harriette Dittmer was made happy Qn Christmas day by the gifts that were showered upon her by many friends. Miss Dittmer has been an invalid for monthg and has been confined to her bed or some time. C, to spend holidays with her mother, returns on Wednesday to her work in the In ternal Revenue department. o Mrs. W. S, Miller has as her guests for the winter, her aunt, Mrs. Sade Psley and her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Price, from Hubbard, O. W. O. W. BANQUET ' All Woodmen of the World, of White Pine Camp No. 213 are re quested to be present at their hall on Thursday night, January 2nd, for a banquet and installation of officers. As this "the beginning of the New Year all are urged to ise present and start the New Year off right. Visit ing brethren are invited to attend. BRYSON MARKHAM DEAD Bryson Markman, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Floyd Jackson, died Decem ber 12, at his home near Cedar Mountain and was buried the Satur day following at Mud Creek. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Morgan. Mr. Markman is survived by his wife and three chil dren. MISS MILLER DEAD Miss Mary Miller, who has been so ill at Patton Memorial hospital, died on Sunday. Miss Miller was a sister of the late Mrs. T. M. Smith and made her home with her and later with her niece, Mrs. Caldwell. She was 85 years old. The funeral ser vices were conducted, by her pastor, Rev. J. L. Ligon, at the house and the interment . was at Oakdale cemetery on Monday afternoon. ' 'POSSUM HUNT The 'possum hunt given by J. Mack Rhodes, one evening recently was thoroughly enjoyed by these young people: Misses Helen and Bess Child, Alice and Lena Latham, Gladys, Louise and Virginia Hodges, Ruth Wooten, Jean Williams, Reese Pope, Allen, Gaither and Cecil Rhodes. DINNER PARTY On Thursday evening, December 26, Miss Dorothy Waldrop- was hostess at a dinner party -given at her home in honor of her guest, Miss Hines. The other guests were Miss Mary Carol Bland, Gladys Waldrop, Frank Bland, William Penny, Will Hodges and Paul Waldrop. The din ner was excellently served in four courses. Supt. G. W. Bradshaw arrived Friday afternoon from Ivor, Va., where he spent part of his vacation. :o: Mrs. W. Reddin Kirk is out again after being on the sick list for several days. o Mrs. A. S. Truex is reported as be ing just a little better than she was last week. o Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Valley motored to Greenville, S. C, last Saturday for the week-end. They will bring their daughter, Margaret, back with them. o Miss Kate Dotson leaves this week for Raleigh, N. C, where she will enter Peace Institute. XL
