g House, at 8 p.m. 23
At the mass meeting of the citisens
held in the Court Bouse last Saturday
the first definite steps were taken
which are to make Hendersonville the
lirsi resort town, not only of the South i
but of the whole America continent,
biul oue of the must beautilut town in
the world.
Enthusiasm was the order of the day.
The speakers were applauded heartily,
and of the hundreds present, not one
objecting voice was raised
Sufficient stock subscriptions wire
made to guarantee the preliminary
steps being taken, such as surveys be
inginade, option on the surrounding
land being taken, etc. This work Is
necessary before serious steps toward
the actual construction of the lake can
be taken.
The court house was full of citizens
of the town and from the country, many
of them being owners of property on
the proposed lake.
Capt. M. C. Toms was elected chair
man of the meeting, and T. R. Barrows
and T. W. Valentine, secretaries.
The first speaker was W. A. Smith,
who made a strong plea for the proposed
lake, saying there was no objection to
it which could not be answered. He
said we were not fighting Asheville,
Toxaway, or any other place in North
Carolina, that one place could not build
up without profiting its neighboring
cities, and that Hendersonville had al
ready profited enormously through its
proximity to Lake Toxaway. lie closed
by advocating that every man woman
and child in Hendersonville adopt as
their motto, "Dam Mud Creek." Said
unless the needed options were secured,
there would be no lake, therefore It
was to everyone's interest to give the
required options and thereby vastly in
crease the value of their remaining
property.
Hon. H. S. Anderson was the next
speaker, and his theme was "Beauty as
an Asset.' Mr. Anderson's speech
was a beautiful piece of word painting,
and probably no finer little talk has
ever been heard in the court house.
He pictured the great expanse of water,
with the blue sky and the great old
mountains reflected there, he spoke of
the launches, the white-sailed boats
floating calmly on the bosom of the
beautiful lake, he drew attention to the
fact that mountain scenery has ever
been counted the finest, and that when
you get the rare combination of moun
tains and lakes you have a combination
hard to beat, and one, in this ease
which will make Hendersonville the
most famous and beautiful town on the
American continent. Mr. Anderson's
speech was listened to attentively and
he was greeted with prolonged applause
at its finish.
I B. Morse followed and said the
town was now where it must either re
main a village or develop into a great
and thriving city.
Col. Pickens said he was 70 years old,
and at that age he thought too slowly,
weighed his words too carefully, to be
able to say in five minutes all he might
say in favor of the project, but thought
it would put us 100 years ahead of any
other town in the United States.
John Orr, in a rousing little speech,
said that this was the most important
meeting ever held in Hendersonville.
Judge Pace claimed it was all "Tom
foolery" for a man of his size to try and
say anything in five minutes, and want
ed to give his time to Mr. Anderson.
Chas. French Toms said he knew
there was something doing because
there were so many lawyers in the
Special Correspondence. . -
For three weeks Messrs. Britt and
Crawford have waged a friendly con
test for a 15,600 seat in congress and
great truck farm and vastly benefit the eacn has fought bravely and well for his
meeting, and they were all talking for
nothing without pay. Said it would
convert tiena erson county into one
farmers, and skilled and unskilled labor
ers.
Judge O. V. F. Blythe congratulated
himself upon being a citizen of Hender
sonville, and was glad to see all so
united.
Dr. Few said he would GIVE all his
bottom land, and said he, for one, would
not be guilty of the dog in the manger
act.

room for argument, it was simply, a

Jonathan Williams made a speech
which stirred the big audience and his
time was extended in answer to loud
calls from the crowd. Said you might

down this lake. The proposed new
railroad will make llendersonviLe a

Rev. Miller, Dr. Love, Dr. Lltaker,
and Rev. G. 8. Jones then spoke briefly,
after which subscriptions for stock were
announced, and nearly $1200 was raised
on the spot. Messrs. Smith, Anderson
and Garland were appointed a commit
tee to solicit subscriptions, and the big

Crawford-Britt Debate.
Messrs. Crawford and Britt will speak
at Mills river on Saturday, Oct. 20tb,
and in Hendersonville on Monday the
22nd. Let everyone who is interested
n hearing the issues of the campaign
ably and forcibly presented, turn out
and make this speaking one long to be
remembered. Prof. Britt is an enter-
taing talker, and of course Hon. W. T.
Crawford needs no introduction to the
voters of Henderson county, as he is
counted one of the ablest political
speakers in the whole country. The
date is Monday, Oct. 22na, and every
indication points towards the debate
being a hot one. If you want to get
posted on the issues of the campaign,
turn out and listen to these two able ex-
ponanta.
respective party. Tuesday night they
spoke to a crowded and enthusiastic
house at Asheville, the campaign stops
for one week.
Mr. Britt, in a scholarly and logical
way, has advocated the beauties of Pro
tection that he claims has brought to the
United States prosperity and wealth.
His more aggressive competitor in vig
orous ana forceful manner has de
nounced the republican leaders in North
Carolina. While the rank and file of
the republican party are honest, and 'he
has ridiculed the slogan of Protection
that protects the trusts, millionaire
manufacturers and corporate wealth,
while it robs the Southern farmer ajod,
makes him pa.v higher for trust-mado
goods. , -
Mr. Britt if a nice. Christian gentle
man wltn a clean record, but lb a cold
blooded proposition that fails to enthuse
or animate his crowd with his speeches.
Mr. Crawford is an experienced cam
paigner, who warms up his audience
with his enthusiasm, and he knows how
to win votes. On the day after elec
tion you will find Crawford a winner
with increased majority, and don't jou
forget it.
Two years ago Congressman Gudger
won his election by less than a thousand
majority about 900 votes. There has
been no political upheavel in this dis
trict since that election, so Crawford's
chances of election are splendid. He is
a .more aggressive campaigner, who
keeps' Britt an the defensive and is a
more skilled adversary than Britt. Of
ten I have heard old farmers laugh and
cry, "Crawford is just too much for
Britt!"
The three counties of Rutherford,
Buncombe and Haywood will give
Crawford a democratic majority exceed
ing 2000 votes. Rutherford is expected
to give him 800 majority, and there are
several other democratic counties with
each a majority of 100 to increase the
above estimate for Crawford. Each one
of the three above named will give oyer
600 majority.
Per conhra, the biggest republican
county Henderson, will give only 400
majority, or much less, perhaps, for
Britt and the two next strongest repub
lican counties will give as usual about
250 each majority for Britt. A few
others will give him only 100 majority
or less.
But the three above named counties
of Rutherford. Buncombe and Hav-
.
wood insure Crawford's election, and
Crawford's campaign is winning him
more votes.
Britt complains he has only one little
republican newspaper,' while his com
petitor has an able dally and a dozen
weeklies to advocate his candidacy. Yet

I note in your issue of October 2nd that
State Chairman Adams of the republican

party leased the North Carolina railroad
to the Southern. I said no such thing.

Chairman Adams' criticism goes for noth
