The independent roters of Henderson county, in general mass meeting assembled, declare: That excessive taxation, extravagance and mismanagement of the financial affairs of the county; the domination of rings and combinations in local politic1; the favor itism shovfn certain families nd family connections in the selection of county of ficers and the contamination of the elector ate of the county by the use of money in elections, demand that the people should rise above partisan considerations, and take such concerted aotion as will best con serve the welfare of all the citizens of the county. That this movement is for the benefit of all the people and not in the interest of any political party. Any candidate on this platform is enjoined from enacting or as sisting in the enacting of any legislation of a partisan character affecting Hender son county.. That the corrupt use of money in politi cal campaigns is one ot the greatest evils In modern politics. The people of Henderson county are Spending from fourteen thousand to sixteen thousand dollars annually in the public schools of the county in an effort to elevate the citizenship and place our people on a higher plane of life. Much of the good accomplished along these lines is being counter-acted by the corrupt use t.f mou oey in our bi-annual elections. We there- fore pledge ourselves to do all we can lo exterminate this evil from the politics ot the county and to encourage more, string ent legislation by our Legislature looking to this end. That the strictest economy should be observed in the management of our coun ty'B finances, and complete publicity should be given all matters relating to the collec tion and disbursement of the county funds That th office of tax collector and treas urer should be united and the compensa tion of the tax collector for collecting and paying out the county funds should not ex- oeed twelve hundred dollars per year and costs and expenses connected with the of- fice- That the Register of Deeds should be paid a salary of one thousand dollars per year and be allowed a sum not exceeding four hundred dollars per year for an as sistant. That the Clerk of the Superior Court should be paid a salary of one thousand dollars year for his services, provided that his salary should never exceed-the income from the office. That all moneys collected by the Regis ter of Deeds and Clerk of the Court in ex cess of the amounts hereinbefore namt-d shall be placed to the credit of the geuerai county funds. That the candidate nominated by this mass meeting by their acceptance of said nomination thereby pledge themselves to abide by the above recommendations and to uphold any laws enacted by the Legis lature in accordance therewith. That on all funds held by the County Treasurer a period of three montns or longer he shall be required to pay interest at the rale allowed by banks on time dt posits. That experience has shown that loog terms in office are productive ot rings and combinations in local politics which never conserve the best interests of the people. We believe in the example set by the ira mortal Washington. We are opposed to the election of one man to the same office for more than two terms. That we denounce the "Court House Ring'' as a travesty on free governmenr, blot on the fair name of our couotry and a disgrace to the party to which the mem bers thereof claim to belong. That we demand a reasonable and fair road law under which our public roads may be kept passable. That we endorse all reasonable and ius efforts on the part of the people of our State to advance the cause of temperance therein, That we submit this, our platform, to the respectful consideration of our fellow citizens of Henderson county, and ask al who agree with ns in the principles herein set forth togive us their assistance in put ting them in force in the county. 8.
