In introducing Mr. J. Elwood
Cox, the Republican candidate
for governor to the people of
Asheville last week as reported
in the Gazette-News, Prof. J. J.
Britt said that a Democrat had
told him that during the Cleve
land panic he sold 4u bushels of
corn to pay his subscription to
the Charlotte Observer forgone
year $8.00 and that now he. is
receiving $1.10 a bushel. . .
That statement is in keeping
with other campaign methods of
the republicans. Prof. Britt
either believed what this demo
crat told him or else he , thought
it wou'd be best to repeat it as if
be be ieved k. As with some
other itatemants from the' stump
it lacks a very - important ele
ment, and that is the element of
truth. If Mr. Britt's Democrat
meant to say that it took. all the
proceeds of the. forty bushels to
pay his subscription to the Char
lotte Observer, then he either
sold far below the market price
or else he told a falsehood. In
either case Mr. Britt should have
taken the trouble to find out the
facts before giving currency., to,
the statement. . v ' J,-:
Let us see how it tallies- with
the recorded f acts. Geo. B. Cor
telyou, the present secretary, of
the treasury and secretary ' of
Commerce and Labor in 1903, in
his Statistical "Abstract oh page
375 says that . the raverage price
of corn in the United States on
December 1st, the middle of the
Cleveland administration or
while the panic was on; was. .45
cents per' bushels. On December
1st, 1898, the middle -of the Mc
Kinley administration and after
theJMngley Law had been passed,
he says, the price was cents a
bushel.
Still while the facts are a
hand or easily accessible, Repub
lican speakers content them
selves with making statements
that the records will not sub
stantiate. ' v
Surely Mr. Britt's Democrat's
experience in selling com: is sim-
ilar to Major Rollin's in buying
wheat. ' v y
The question is jvho told the
truth? Waynesville Courier.
' 'Oft I pause, , persuading pictures
