children, most of it would be saved, to
say nothing of many lives, and the
prevention of much suffering and sor
row. All of these things, and more, are
being taught in the campaign of ed
ucation which is world wide today.
But we are not directing our attention
solely to the laity, for it is also being
directed to the medical profesioh. We
are asking for higher educational re
quirements in order to be allowed to
practice medicine in the United States.
We have in 4t many of our medical
collages now, and. in some of cur
states. But we have'nt it in North
Carolina as it should be. And we are
asking our politicians to stop the cry
of "poor boy and, medical trust" when
we ask for legislation that wiU keep
out ihcompetant physicians, and there
by save many useful lives to our
state. . . i
F believe I. am conservative when I '
say that no less than 75 per cent of"
the physicians of . North Carolina, and
in fact, or tne umtea siai.es, ao uut
recogni'ze tuberculosis in its early and
curable stage. The average physician
is not-a student of tuberculosis, and
he knows littlemore about the disease
than tha averaee layman who reads
, the leading periodicals of the day.
There are some wno ao not recognize
the "s disease even" in! the advanced
stage and others who-fill cat the death
certificate to the 'effect (that - some
other disease was the cause of death.
There are still others whe, while re
cognizing the disease, will not inform
the patient to that effect allowing him
to go 4n his "Ignorance spreading the'
disease where ever he ma go. So, we
are aiming at more competancy in the
medical profession by means of high
er educational requirements for lic
ense to practice medicine, so that ear
ly diagnoses will be made; and we are
preaching greater honesty 6 nthe part
of some of our physicains, so that de
ception will not be practiced onpat
ients, and the community have to suf
fer the direful consequeces.
Philanthropy has been appealed to,
and-as it always does when the cause
is worthy generously has money been
contributed to the campaign for the
prevention' of tuberculosis. Hospitals
and sanatoria have been built and en
dowed ; competnant medical men v and
women have been placed in charge of
tbtn. I'r-cTJsaries. have been creat
a 'm nurses employed.

oU'ted States government has
been active 4o the f"s re, cf "Pure.
Food and Drug Act " , n in the
prosecution of te ' violators
of the same.- But thevo is yet
much to dothat has not n- rt been
done. More recruits are nerd for
this- great army of fighters, ar f more
'means with which? to carry out the
work. The work has but just , begun,
but it is certainly going to be carried
out to the end that tuberculosis will
no longer be known.
