TALCOTT WILLIAMS, , Director of the Columbia University School of Journalism. Based on the principle, Immoral In ethics, tyrannical in operation, perilous to all Calomel salivates! It's mercury. Calomel acts like dynamite on a sluggish liver. When calomel comes into contact with sour bile it crashes into it, causing cramping and nausea. If you feel bilious, headachy, con stipated and all knocked out, just go to your druggist and get a bottle of Dodson's Liver Tone for a few cents, which is a harmless vegetable sub stitute for dangerous calomel. Take a spoonful and if it doesn't start your liver and straighten you up better and quicker than nasty calomel and without making you 'sick, you just go back and get your money. If you take calomel today you'll be sick and nauseated tomorrow; be sides, it may salivate you, while if you take Dodson's Liver Tone you will wake up feeling great, full of ambition and ready for work or play. It is harmless, pleasant and safe to give to children; they like it, t!FI YOUR CORNS o OFF WITH FINGERS ::: o:W-:::-:x-:-::Xtt-: :::v 1 4 On i .....i Tells how to loosen a tender corn or callus so it lifts out without pain. You reckless men and women who j are pestered with corns and who have at least once a week invited an awful death from lockjaw or blood poison are now told by a Cincinnati authority to use a drug called freezone, which the moment a few drops are applied to any corn or callus the soreness is re lieved and soon the entire corn or cal lus, root and all, lifts off with the fin gers. Freezone dries the moment it is ap plied, and simply shrivels the corn or cal lus without inflaming or even irritating the surrounding tissue of skin. A small bottle of freezone will cost very little at any of the drug stores, but will posi tively rid one's feet of every. hard or soft corn or hardened callus. If your druggist hasn't any freezone he can get it at any wholesale drug house for you. IF YOUR CHILD IS CROSS, FEVERISH, CONSTIPATED Look, Mother! If tongue Is coated, J cleanse little bowels with "Cali- , , fornia Syrup of Figs." Mothers can rest easy after giving "California Syrup of Figs," because in - a few hours all the clogged-up waste, J sour bile and fermenting food gently moves out of the bowels, and you have ' a well, playful child again. . Sick children needn't be coaxed to take this harmless "fruit laxative." Millions of mothers keep it handy be muse. they know its action 'on the stom ;ach, liver and bowels- is prompt and sure. Ak your druggia-. for a bottle of ."Calojjfa Syrup of Figs," which con .tains dictions for babies, children of .all ages and for grown-ups. ! Its whole In fluence has been thrown to suppress freedom In the four Balkan states. It has prevented their peaceful de velopment, refused - ' to enforce the Trea- Talcott Williams, ty of Berlin, which , would have brought peace, and is responsible for four Bal kan wars. A scre of years ago it supported the bloodthirsty Sultan of Turkev In Armenian massacres, and I the officers of the "Imperial German Government" have aided and abetted these massacres now because the Ar menians worked and planned for lib erty when other races in Turkey were quiescent. It is the "Imperial German Government" which Is responsible for 800,000 Armenians, starved to death as Germans themselves testify. "Secret Enemy." In 1008, when the revolutionary Turkish government was for freedom, Germany opposed it; when It became tyrannical Germany made this govern ment its ally. The German govern ment harassed France not merely be cause It was its ancient enemy, but because its success as a republic made the French people perilous to princes. The German government plotted to re store the Manchu Emperor and the Russian Czar to their thrones. Because the American people by Its prosperity and power made liberty desired by all the world the German government has been its secret enemy. Thirty years ago it plotted against oui treaty rights in Samoa; it sent Its fleet to worry and threaten Dewey at Manila in 1898; it offered to Eng land, which refused, to overturn the Monroe Doctrine in Mexico. It has In fifteen years threatened Venezuela, Mexico, Hayti and other American states. When we were maintaining peace under great provocation, it pro posed to Mexico and Japan to attack us, both refusing. It betrayed inter national faith in the dispatches sent through the Swedish Minister. It filled our land with spies, sought unavailing ly to embroil us with those of German birth resident In this country, slaugh tered our citizens on the high seas, contrary to all law, national and inter national, human and divine, , We waited long, we bore much, and we are now sending our sons to the war declared against the "Imperial German Government" because the rec-1 ord of thirty years shows that neither liberty nor 3emocrVitic Institutions are safe the world pyer while that govern ment Is powerful. Ve wisely prefer, after what Belgium suffered, to fight Germany "somewhere in France" rath er than in New York harbor; pn the Somme, rather than on the Hudson. In one or the other we should have had to fight Ifl 1776 te sent our sons to fight for American liberty, and we won it. In 1812 we fought for the freedom of the sea, and we won Cx&t. In 1861 we sent our sons to fight for the liberty of the slave, and we won that Today we send our sons out to fight for the liberty of humanity, and we shall win that AN APPEAL TO ALL PATRlOTICl'JOrifl Mrs. Thomas J. Preston, Jr. (formerly Mrs. Grover Cleveland), in a message to the women of America, made public through the Na tional Security League. Mrs. Preston is active in the Secur ity League work. She was the first woman to become a member of the League's National Ex ecutive Committee, and is secretary of the League's Committee on Patriotism Through Education. Mrs. Preston's message to the wo men of the country reads in full: "Proclaim Liberty." "'Proclaim Liberty throughout ALL THE LAND unto all the inhabitants thereof. ., , "These words were written about 1490 years before Christ, as part of the Law of Holiness in the Book of Leviticus. Our fathers inscribed them upon the Liberty Bell which called our mighty nation into life. "Today all the inhabitants' enjoy liberty, the Jew and the Gentile, the rich and the poor, the native and the allen-bjorn, the weak and the strong. The old Liberty Bell is silent for its voice has been heard 'throughout all the land. "But Liberty Is not safe. It is men aced along the battle fronts of many nations, our own among them, and America requires a new motto for her old Bell: 'Proclaim liberty through out ALL LANDS unto all the inhab itants thereof. Until liberty Is safe in all lands, it can not be safe in our own. Hence the task to which Amer ica has reverently and unselfishly ded icated herself. "Make Motto Real." "The Fathers of this Republic, men of many races, with a common love of liberty, wrought into law our ancient motto, thus giving liberty a chance to enlighten the world. . "Today we, their descendehts, are called upon to make real the new mottoA and thus to give liberty the undisputed right to bless the world. can bedone bnt only after ; JE beroicstruggle-and self-sacrmr 1 w premature peace would mean" failure. "Victory "Ineans peace and safety for our children; defeat means hu miliation and practical servitude for them; while a negotiated peace, with the military machine of Prussia un broken, means that everything in their lives must 'be subordinated to the. task of preparing for another war with Germany. We can win now if Amer ica can be held steadfast and un swerving, and, the women of America can hold her steadfast" (By Tho. J. Rickman.) It was the very great pleasure .of this writer to meet with 5,000 other North Carolinians, at the Chimney Rock Fourth of July celebration, and one of the first pleasing sights, to see on arriving -was the Hendersonville hnvs with their uniform, sruns and regalia. The right Honorable David Lloyd George, the present premier of Great Britain, has recently said that wherever -he goes he hears nothing but good of the American boys. He now comes forth .with the astonishing statement and says if Germany and her allies want to know what the terms of peace offered by all the thirty or more nations fight ing for democracy and freedom are, they have but to listen to Woodrow Wilson, the head of the greatest de mocracy on earth. Yes, in plain lan guage, it is now understood by all the world, the terms of peace when it comes is to be named by the president of the United States. Not a nation in Europe, Asia, South America, or the" islands of the seas but that says America shall name the identical terms' of peace. It is the greatest honor, as well as the greatest responsibility that could ever be placed on a nation, but with our glorious Constitution, our great est of all peoples of earth, our flag of forty-eight stars, representing 48 of the most noble states that now exists or ever did exist, presided over by the cleanest, braniest man that ever ruled a country, is equal to any tfcsk. A large part of the good citizens of Henderson county are honest hearted republicans in their politics, and naturally they would be glad if their party was in power during this terrible world war. Let this writer give them some consolation and food for developing thought. Take up history and we find that he whom we call the father of our coiintry, George Washington,, was neither a republican nor a democrat, for neither of these parties had been formed then, but came into exist ence as our governme" and natn grew and expanded. First was thej democratic party, said to nave oeen formed by Thomas Jefferson, a greater statesman than whom had never lived up to his time Then came the momentous issues 1918. of the Civil war, over the curse of slavery, and here is where republi can party glory begins. We in the South did not know it then, but un der the providence of God a greater and more glorious man than either Washington or Jefferson, came forth, a republican, Abraham Lincoln, the then greatest man on earth. As the Indiana poet, just after the battle of Bull Run, called him, "Father Abra ham" "We '.are coming Father Abraham, fifty thousand strong." They came many fifty thousand strong, at the' father's call and they cleaned us up, in the South and set us right, just as America will set Germany and the world right now soon. Wilson. .
