What is the matter that the work on the sidewalks is not being pushed along this fine weather? 2. Since $20,000 worth of side walk bonds were sold and the mon ey therefor obtained about the mid dle of January, would it not be bet ter to have the the twenty thousand dollars worth of sidewalks built now, instead of having the streets and sidewalks torn up and more or less obstructed by the contractors and their materials during the sum mer months? The republican convention of the Tenth district of North Carolina, which will be held at Asheville Saturday, April 2, will be an occasion of very great interest. Ad dresses will be madS by three congressmen of national rep utation, Hon. Duncan E. McKinley, representative from the Second district of California; Hon. Adna P. Johnson, representative from the Tenth district of Ohio; and Hon. John G. Grant, representative from the Tenth district of North Carolina. A large attendance is expected. The republicans cf this district are proud of the record made by their congress man, and a number of democrats admit that Mr. Grant is the best representative the district has ever had. Catitpaign for B etter Roads prinkler Hendersonville is preparing to welcome the good roads convention which will meet here Wednesday, March 30. Sessions will be held in the court house morning and afternoon. State Geologist Pratt will preside. A meeting was held Wednesday night and various committees were appointed to make the necessary ar rangements for the convention. Delegates will come from ajiumber of town and counties; and in addition to the appointed delegates we hope to see as many citizens as possible from every town and county affected by the pro posed roads. Hendersonville extends a cordial welcome to ail. (Asheville, Spartanburg, Qreenyille, Tryon, Ruth erford ton and Shelby papers please copy.) Among local delegates who have already been ap pointed are: W A. Smith and J. Williams for Henderson county; J. O. Bell for Green River township; H. M. Roberts for Hooper's Creek township; A. Cannon for Henderson ville township. " ine ionowing statement oy state ueolotist rratt is of interest: No county or township should be come discouraged on account of the number of mile3 of road that it is necessary for them to construct, nor should their enthusiasm be dampened by the present bad con dition of their roads, which may seenTto indicate to them that it is an impossible feat to construct the system of roads advocated. I am confident that we can. build this system of roads and that we will build, them. The Highway Division of the North Carolina Geological and Economic survey will do its utmost to make a complete survey of the highways proposed, and draw up plans and specifications for their construction, showing their location and grade; how to surface them, and what materials to use. Some of the roads may be macadamized, others will be surfaced with sand clay, and still others with gravel. The i "exact location., of these Tbads, cannot be known definitely until the survey has been made, although it is known approximately." As thus far worked out there will- be of the Charlotte-Knoxville road approxi mately' 10 miles of the road in MecKienoure county, zu miles in Gastoh" county, the road through Gastonia and Bessemer City; 22 miles Cleveland county, the road passing through. A good many pejple, ho had an old-! fashioned notion that the object of a street-sprinkler is to water the streets in dusty weather, have been asking (sometimes with almost profane emphasis) Why that ma chine is not used. The say that the taxpayers paid gcod money for it and that some use ought to be made o it It is always a pleasure to be able to answer questions, and we have made a careful investigation of this matter in order to allay the growing indignation of the" long-suffering public. After studying the Revised Statutes, the constitution of the United States and of North Caro lina and of the board o! aldermen, Hicks' almanac the Nautical Ephemeris and other high-priced publications, we have unani mousl reached the conclusion that the explanation is as follows. passing The street spripkler is an object of extraordinary beauty ana attrac tiveness, and needs constant , and loving care. Jt cannot be taken out in bright weather for fear it might get sun-burned; in partly ; cloudy weather it ;has to be kept mdodrs; for fear it might get freck lecl; and in rainy "weather there is no, need'qfa sprinkler: , : 'J.I 11 Welnrst -this explanation J will give entire satisfaction. l.e.ihperi; tmnJs,iheL..more1 k Icks theparL V Jresh New C-arden Seeds Our new seeds have been Received We haue almost any variety you wish and will guarantee the quality of every kind to be true to name and to germinate. dojY't send off foe your seed We can sell them to you in any quantity and often Save You Money on them.
