' The author of "War and Peace.
Anna Karemna and "Kreutzer
Sonata" is dead at the advanced
ag of 82. He was world-famous
as a writer, but for many years it
had made him impatient to be con
gratulated upon his literary fame.
His works were valued only in so
far as they spread the ideas which
he had espoused. The author dis
appeared in the teacher and reform
er. Probably he rather sought to
pattern himself after, those teachers
who influenced mankind for all
time without ever having written a
line.

and by the same token they may be
forgiven him. The singular con
tradictions of the Russian tempera
ment, impractical idealism ,,amid
the most brutal repression, produced
the Tolstoi who died yesterday.
Under happier conditions-he might
have been as great, but in a differ
ent way.
Here was a man who counted
rank, wealth and life itself as noth-

severest measures of the Russian
government measures never taken,
however, ovving presumably to the
personal regard of successive Czars
for him and the' bad effect which
would have been created abroad
He invited and suffered ex-com-

mediaeval consequences. Surely
Tolstoi, in moral "energy, and devo

statement by President. Taft'indi-v

tion with regard to Panama: ;
f A11 this makes us especially- in
terested in what-is-xlone in your
government, biit this relation neith-
n er calls for. nor permits " annexation
We afe here to construct, mamtain,
operate, and defend the world, canal
jurisdiction over that part of your
country occupied by the canal to
enable us to do this effectively. We
do no wish any further responsibil
ity in respect to your government
than is necessary , in the ' carrying
out of our jmrpose to construct; and
maintain this canal We ' have no
desire to add to the territory , trader
our jurisdiction, except as the oper
ation df the canal may require it.
"We have guaranteed your integ
rity as a republic, and for us to
annex' territory would be to violate
that gxraraiiteej and nothing would
lustily it on '.our . part so long as.
Panama performed hef part Under
the treaty."
Washington, Nov. 20. Summar
ized'in a. phrase, ' satisfactory pro
gress all along the Panama canal
zone," is the gist of the annual re
port of the Isthmian Canal Coihmis
sion made to Secretary of - War
Dickinson by Col. George W. Goe
thals, chairman of the commission
and chief engineer in charge of the
work on the canal, and made public
today, by the former.
With the work of excavation and
of construction progressing favor
ably at all points along the line "
with health conditions better than
ever before; with ;a centralization
and consequent economy in certain
parts of the work and with a maxi
mum of laborers since the United
States began to dig the canal, Colo
nel Goethal's report was decidedly
pleasing to Secretary Dickinson.

Denver. Colo., Nov. 17. With one
wing tip of his machine crumpled
like a piece of paper, Ralph John
stone, the brilliant young aviator,
holder of the world's altitude rec
ord, dropped like a plummet from a
heigut of 500 feet into the enclusure
at Overland Park aviation field late
today and was instantly killed.
When the! spectators, crowded
Aabout the enclosure, reached him.
his body lay beneath the engine of
the biplane,, with the white planes
that had failed him in his time of
need, wrapped about it like a shroud.
Nearly every bone in his body was
broken.

Nov. 18. A
special cable message from 'Berlin
to the Post of this city contains. the
following interesting information: as
to plans on foot for reforming the
calendar. 1
Berlin, Nov. 16 The movement
for the reform of the Gregorian cal
endar seems to be taking more
tangible shape than heretofore. The
Swiss federal "council, according to
the Berne correspondent of the
vj&sische Zeitung, will invite all
the nations to a conference at Berhe,
"with "the' viewr to adopting an ar
rangement by-which every year will
be divided into exactly 52 weeks,
or 364 days. " -
- New Year's day would be . an
extra day. Sunday would bear no
date. 'The four quarters of the year
would be exactly the same length
30, 30 and 31 days, successively.
Thus the 31st day of ,. March, , June,
September, and -Dec&nber would
