Hepburn, Presbyterian, Chi cago. Tho Ftrtnrs. If there be no hereafter and no fu ture vindication of the upright, then virtue and purity are but names, and tihe only possible conclusion is, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we Jie!" Rev. W. P. Georje, Methodist Denver. Serving Mankind. Be yourself and be your best self. Make it your ambition to be of service -to men in any adverse condition you may be placed. You cannot be of serv ice to man without being of service to God. Rev. W. H. Falkner, Episco palian, Boston.' Building Character. The making of character is like the making of a book. Building character resembles the making of a book first of all in the fact that it is so fine an art that only the few nobly succeed. Rev. Dr. N. McGee Waters, Cougiega .lionalist, Brooklyn. Good, Ship Progress. With the state, the home and the school the church stands a great light in the world,; "and by that light the good ship Progress' slowly but surely moves on to; a higher and more stable civilization. Rev. W. D. Simonds, Uni tarian. Oakland, Cal. . Rightful Hearts Let our hearts be right toward God and we shall come forth, like Corne lius, from temptation with ai clearer vision, a more enduring faith Hud bet ter, fitted to receive the 'honors that God may further confer upon us. Rev. Robert H. Carson, Presbyterian, Brooklyn. Moral Law Is Sure. There is a moral law as truly as there is a law of gravitation, and this igreat law of laws will stand for no trifling with itself, and with both the Individual and the nation nothing en dures that does not rest on justice and decency. ReV. Thomas Br Gregory, "Oniversalist, New York. Importance of Character. Pride and vanity emphasize calling rather than character. It is. character, that counts and not office. No office ever yet made a man. If a man hasn't the character and ability to fill a posi tion that office will never give him those things.--Rev. J. W. 1 Brougher, Mtiiuuuisi,. vniauu, vie. Baseball Is Rare Recreation. Baseball offers rare and splendid recreation for the hard driven man of today. It makes him forget busi ness and causes his blood to jump with new vigor as he works up his in terest in the game. Every bit of clean sport is religions, for the better the body the better service the individual ?an render to God in helping man kind in the upward progress. Rev. Christian P. Reisner, Methodist. New York. Spirit of Welcome Needed. It is not necessary for our church to grind out laws for the everyday busi- ness of our churches and force upon us a marriage law which is a slap in jhe' face of good men and women who are unfortunate. I will welcome to this holy communion a ny person who may ome without question. We must have more of tht spirit of welcome in our hurches than at present. A church eannot lead Ae best sentiment of its age by making; huge harriers of un christian workmanship like the pres en.t attempt to change the divorce law. Rev. George C. Richmond, Epis copal, Philadelphia. I ' Discontent of the Day. Even the casual observer , of the : times cannot f ail to notice the dis-, content of men and women. 'Per1 haps never, before in the history of life has the world witnessed such a -scene of unrest and dissatisfaction as we see today. The laborer is discon tented with his wage, , the empioyer is dissatisfied . with his profits, the rich -are Unhappy, in their possessions, and even In the domain of religion men and women complain of the lot God has given them. - What v is the cause of this universal unrest and dissatis faction? What has brought about this growing tendency of criticism and malevolence? It has come to Us sim ply because , we have forgotten our real position In life, because In the turmoil of activity and-endeavor we Thave ceased, to be thinking men and -women and because humanr life is no longer true to its real status, but rests on a falseness, pride and eonceit which -. must bring in their, flvafce pernicious consequences. War is necessarily bad enough un i der any circumstances, but its laws and usages are steadily changing for the better. In very early times all pris j oners were ruthlessly put to the sword j or reduced to slavery, and as for the : property rights of the belligerents they , did not exist. In the famous pandicts of Justinian it is stated without tho least equivocation that an enemy's property of every description is res nullius (that is to say. is without an owner) and that occupancy, by which tbe captor makes it his own. is an in stitution of natural law. Christ Our Compass. The reason why so many fail in life is because they go out on life's high sea without chart or compass, witnout sail or rudder, and are drifted by every wind that blows and heaved by every tide 'that flows. Dr. Charles Bayard Mitchell, Methodist Episcopal, Chicago. Bible All Men's Book. The Bible is the book of righteous ness; it is the book of God; it is the book of heaven and immortality of Christ; it is all men's book. And the book on which Jesus fed his mind and by which he was nourished up to spiritual manhood is still the book to comfort and hylp and strengthen us. Rev. Charles F. Aked, Baptist, New York. An Audacious Suggestion. If our statesmen are liars, our poli ticians grafters, our business men mer cenary altogether, our courts corrupt, our churches and ministers the tem ples of Pharisaical snobbery, why should we go out into the world to say to the ignorant, the oppressed, the heathen, "Look at us?" Could any thing be more audacious? Rev. Fred erick E. Hopkins, Congregationalist, Gary, Ind. Religious Movement Means Uplift. Tco often it is thought that a re ligious movement concerns the church es alone and is an effort to build up the organized forces of Christianity. This is a totally wrong idea. A move ment of true religion means the uplift of everything that is right in a com munity; it means also the, overthrow of the evil forces and the defeat of unrighteousness in society at large. Rev.
