ANOTHER COTTON MILL
FOR RUTHERFORDTON
Interesting Letter From the
County Seat—Negro Flim-
Flammer at New Game
Rutherfordton Feb. 2.—Rutherford
ton is assured of another cotton mill,
W. A. Harrill and B. F. Dobbins, of
Rutherfordton, the promoters, having
applied to the secretary of state for a
charter for a cotton mill to be known as
the Elizabeth Spinning Company of
Rutherfordton. The authorized capital
stock will be SBOO,OOO, with a good por
tion of the stock already subscribed.
The mill is to be installed with 12,000
spindles for the manufacture of fine
combed yarns. An order for the ma
chinery for the new concern has already
been placed. The exact location of the
mill has not definitely been decided as
yet.
Attorney Michael Schenck, of Hender
sonville was in Rutherfordton the latter
part of last week in the interest of his
condidacy for judge of the Superior
court for this judicial district to succeed
Judge J. Bis Ray, of Burnsville, who
was appointed to fill the unexpired term
of the late Judge M. H. Justice. Mr,
Schenck was solicitor in the eighteenth
judicial district for about eight years
prior to the world war, when he was
called into the service of "Uncle Sam"
for our country.
A novel scheme to defraud the negroes
of Rutherford county was discovered a
few days ago when chief of police R. L.
Houser and deputy sheriff J. W. Jones
arrested a negro man who gave his
name as Robert Davis, and claimed
Hickory Grove, S. C., as his home.
Davis claimed to be a census enumera
tor and told the negro men that the
government required them to take out
life insurance under a penalty ranging
from SI,OOO to $5,000. His fee for the
alleged service was $6.00 and after
having lined up about 30 negroes around
Rutherfordton with the expectation of
collecting his pay of $6 from each one
of them, a suspicious party reported
him to the police and he was arrested
as above stated. The negro fills the
description of the man wanted at Reids
ville charged with murder and for whom
a reward of SSO has been offered. A
photograph and description has been
sent to the authorities at Reidsville and
he is being held in jail pending an inves
tigation. The chief of police from Hick
ory Grove was in Rutherfordton yester
day and identified the negro as Robert
Davis, from Hickory Grove, who is
wanted there by the authorities charged
with stealing. Davis will doubtless
have a preliminary hearing before Re
corder Judge Mcßrayer within a few
days, and if not convicted, will be turn
ed over to the authorities of Hickory
Grove.
