Each guest received a lovely box of Martha Washington candy. ss an * The Near East Drive has gone over the top in Rutherford coun ty. The county's quota was $1,380. Chairman Gallert announced to day that the drive is over the top and funds keep coming in. The county also went over the top in the Woodrow Wilson Foundation drive. Work will begin soon on the new Baptist church here. Pledges were taken Sunday. The church will be very modern and will cost about $30,000. The political pot in Rutherford will boil soon. There is gossip o:i the streets as to who will be a candidate for the various >li>es. Rutherfordton will likely get a new postoffice building at an early date, according to an interview with Congressman Weaver recent ly. The government has owned a lot to erect the building on for some time. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Flack are visiting friends and relatives in Chattanooga. The U. D. C. held their March meeting with Mrs. W. R. Hill Fri day afternoon. A collection was taken for the benefit of the Wo men's Confederate Home. Born to Dr. and Mrs. Robert H. Crawford, a fine boy. WAISTS STRING BAND FOR FOREST CITY Mr. O. C. Turner hfts requested the Courier to call a meeting to be held at the Moss-Reinhardt Furniture Company's store next Friday night, at 7:30 o'clock, at which time steps will be taken to form a string band to be com posed of local talent. It is urged that every music lover be in at tendance *>at this meeting—espe cially the young men who have musical talent. However, it is not essential that you already be a string instrument player to join, as the club will have as teacher Dr. Wm. R. Hicks, of Chesnee, S. C„ who is said to be one of th'e very best musicians in this sec tion of the country. With an in structor of this class, Forest City should easily turn out one of the best string bands in the state. Let everyone interested in the formation of this musical club be present at the meeting Friday night,. s,o that the organization of the club can be made and steps taken at once for the beginning of the work of training. See Mr. Turner for more com plete information on the subject. SUMMER TOURISTS FARES TO BE CUT BY SOUTHERN Washington, D. C., Feb. 28. General Passenger Agent H. F. Cary, of the Southern Railway System, announces that the South ern will put in round-trip tourist rates to mountain and seashore re sorts for the coming summer sea son at 80 per cent of the double one-way fares, which is a very substantial reduction under the tourist fares in effect last sum mer For example, where the one way fare is SIO.OO, the round-trip rate this summer will be $16.00. Last year the round-trip rate would have been SIB.OO plus $1.41 wear tax, making a total of $19.44. These rates will apply from all sta tions to all mountain and seashore resorts reached by the Southern and are expected to have a great effect in stimulating tourist travel. THE FOREST CITY COURIER MUSIC CLUB MEETING BEGINS AT GASTONIA TODAY Gastonia, March 6. —Music lovers of the staate will be interested to know the meeting of the State Federation of Music clubs will convene in Gastonia March 9 and 10. Many interesting- visitors are anticipated. Notable among- these will be Mra. John F. Lyons, of Fort Worth, Tex*is, president of the National Federation of Music clubs, and Miss Nan Stevens, of Atlanta, Ga., district president of the South Atlanta States Federa tion of Music clubs.. The Gastonia Music Club, of which Mrs. H. B. Moore is presi dent, will be host to the conven tion, and all social and civic or ganizations in the city will ex tend a hearty welcome to the vis itor&. A reception for Thursday evening is planned to be given by the Woman's 2lub. Luncheons will be given by the Music club and the chamber of commerce.
