FINED SSO; AUTO NUMBER FALSE One young man of a well known Rutherford family was de tected by State Auto License Is • spector Walter L. Harton in Shel by with a "raised" auto license number on his car, the 1921 being carefully changed so as to make it look like "22." He was arrested and before Recorder Falls Monday was fined SSO and the costs and also required to bin license for 1922. His defense vas that he had swapped for the car some months ago and that it had that number-plate on it at the time. A wire to State headquar ters placed the 1921 number so close to the defendant that cir cumstances convicted him. The "19" had been flattened and the "1" of the "21" had been changed to a neat "2," but a close inspection revealed the alteration. The fine would not have been so heavy, but Judge Falls considered it on a par with counterfeiting.— Shelby Highlander. OPENS LAW OFFICE Mr. C. 0. PRIMARY ELECTION SATURDAY, JUNE 3 Strict Party Lines to Govern and Voters Must Declare Party Pref erence—Ruling of Election Board. Next Saturday, June 3, the pri mary election is to be held. Every thing is now in readiness for the battle of ballots, and the voters should inform themselves in re gard to the rules governing the election. The Election Board sends out the following: The voters presenting them selves at the polls June 3rd, must declare themselves either Repub lican or Democrat in their affilia tions and vote accordingly, accord ing to a ruling made public by the State Board of Election. No participation by the members of one party will be tolerated in selecting the candidates of the other. Two primaries are held in the State on that day, the order of the board declares, a Democratic primary and a Republican primary. The voter is free to change his party affiliation but when he changes he mast stick to it. The voter cannot vote for a particular candidate in a party of which he is not a member. Republican participation in the primary will be nominal except in the 27th Senatorial and the Tenth Congressional districts. In only these two instances are there con tests within the party. Elsewhere in the State with the exception of some county offices of which no record is made here the Republi cans will stay out of the primary because it is a Democratic pri mary. The ruling of the board follows: "There are two primaries held on June 3 1922. One a 'Demo cratic' and one a 'Republican.' The Democrats vote in one, the Republicans in the other. No Republican has any business in the Democratic primary; likewise, no Democrat has a right to parti cipate in the Republican primary. "Section 6031 of the Consolidat ed Statutes, being same section of the Election Law, is very full and minute upon the voter's rights. I request all interested in the ques ion to read this section. "It is mandatory that when a voter offers himself to vote in a primary he shall declare the poli tical party with which he affiliates and in whose primary he desires to vote. If a voter, therefore Repub lican, declares that he affiliate's with the Democmtic party, and he desires to vote in the Demo cratic primary* he has a right to do so; but he cannot vote for a particular candidate in that pri mary, and hold on to his Republican affiliation. Of course, the same honest, and fair. It is the duty desired to change his party affilia tions. "A voter changing his party af filiation pledges himself to vote, in the November election, for the party nominees. A record of all changes is kept by the primary election officers. This, therefore, is a plain and simple question. "The voter should be candid, Never was the need of more audi of all election officers, of both political parties, to see that good faith in this matter obtains." TAX!
