McClure Prin cipal Speaker—Commit tees Make Reports. The Rutherford County Club held one of the most profitable meetings in its history at Gilkey consolidated school Tuesday, May 19th at 1:00 p. m., was served by the ladies of that good community and it was one of the best the club has ever had. Around 60 plates were served. County Supt. W. R. Hill made a report for the Moonlight school com mittee. Secretary Z. O. Jenkins made a re port of the Star route committee from GafFney here and stated that if reasonable bids were submitted the Government would establish the route soon. Messrs. M. L. Edwards and C. D. Geer made a report for the road committee and stated that every ef fort possible will be made to secure the hardsurfacing of Highway No. 20 especially from Forest City to the Cleveland county line, at an early date. R. E. Price, chairman of the pro gram committee announced that the bankers of the county would have charge of the June meeting and the County Medical Society at the July meeting. President, K. S. Tanner introduced the speaker of the day, Mr. James G. K. McClure, president and general manager of the Farmers Federation, Inc. He is also connected with the State Department of Agriculture, Division of markets. The address of Mr. McClure was practical and vital. He told of the founding and growth of the Farmers Federation and how it has grown in five years from an infant organization until last year it did $681,000 worth of business. He stressed the value of advertising and told of instances where markets had been found. He closed by stat ing that the Anglo Saxon people must save civilization and that it was up to our purebred mountain people to do this. GENERAL BOWLEY'S PARTY CHIMNEY ROCK VISITORS Chimney Rock, May 25.—Among the prominent visitors to Chimney Rock section and Hickory Nut gorge here Friday was a party in charge of Brigadier General A. J. Bowley, com mander of Fort Bragg. The party consisted of Congressman Jeremiah E. O'Connell, of Rhode Island and Mrs. O'Connell and Major W. E. Burr, aide to General Bowley. If the afternoon the party went in General Bowley's car to Ashe ville. While in this section they wit nessed the preliminary work being done in getting started on construc tion of the Lake Lure dam, which, when completed, will be 104 feet high and 585 feet across the top, being anchored between two mountains. It was remarked that this constituted the most natural site for a dam at any place seen along the Rocky Broad river. When this party passed the con struction camp now being erected to care for some 900 workmen, there were no new houses at one of the lo cations which had upon their return five cottages ready for the weather boarding. The superintendent in charge stated that his carpenters made a record that day, but this was only typical of the progress they hop ed to make in construction of the dam which would begin just as soon as they had houses repdy for the work men to sleep in. The detour from the main highway around the con struction camp at the dam site is about half completed and traffic can be routed this way within a couple of weeks. Drilling of stone and blasting is going forward in this vicinity to produce the stone necessary for a very large culvert under the new highway.
