SCOUTS ARE DOING ! -v j Writer Attends Meeting At, Gastonia and Tells What Scouts Are Doing. I . ! Ellenboro, Jan. 18. —Editor Cour-; ier: I had the pleasure of attending the annual meeting of the Boy Scout movement in Gastonia Thursday night. There was present about 100 • or more men from the counties of Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland and Rath- : erford, composed of men from all walks of life, such as ministers, doc- ( tors, judges, lawyers and men at' head of large textile mills, some hold- j ing official position in this coun- ; cil of the Boy Scouts. It was not necessary to ask the , question why they were devoting; their time and money for this scout j movement, because you could see j that their heart and soul was in this ( movement for the advancement of j the coming citizenship of this state, j The scout movement is new to the j majority of parents, especially in | small towns and rural communities. • I think it is the duty of all parents ; to inform themselves as to the object j of the scout movement, then I am i sure they would be very anxious to j get their boys to join the scouts. The i scout motto is "Be Prepared," and they are taught to be prepared for any emergency. Some of the char acteristics taught are: Trustworthy, I Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous,! Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent; by learn- j ing the above they are better pre pared as citizens, and have a broad er conception of their duty towards their fellowman, their country and their God. From the reports of Juvenile Courts, I am confident we need just such an organization as the Boy: Scouts, to prepare our boys to be bet ter citizens. O. R. COFFIELD. Chewing tobacco drains the sal i ivary glands, causes "acid indiges , tion" and invites ulceration of the | stomach. If you have sour stomach, ; quit chewing. The saliva is a valu able corrective of acidity, and should not be wasted. Smoking poisons the | olfactory, cardiac, and respiratory nerves.
