Hicks Elmore and Lewis Doggett are pa^U^der^^ i Why Should Some Members Pay Nothing For Support Of the Church? Rev. W. R. Ware, D. D. Does this question mean that there are some who belong to the church who never pay anything to its sup : port? Does only a portion, often a small per cent, pay the larger and some times all that is required to maintain the church? To ask these questions Is to answer them. If any one doubts it let him make the test for himself. 1 The church is supported by volun tary contributions. I know of no oth er benevolent institution that is so maintained. There is no fixed mem ; bership fee to join the church, neither are there stated and arbitrary dues •with a set time to pay them. Yet every one who joins the church assumes a moral obligation to give of his means to the upkeep of the same. The failure to keep this obligation is not always justly chargeable to the violator of it. In every church there ax*e certain ones who have been charged with the temporal affairs of | the church. The nature of their po -1 sition and the trusts committed to them pre-supposes that they will im -1 mediately see every one coming into . the fold and find out how much he is i willing to contribute to the upkeep, I or support of the church he has vol i untarily joined. But a lack of dispo j sition or a willingness to take the ! time and put forth the effort to do I this is tjje great reason for many fail j ing to contribute of their means to maintain and advance the kingdom. The death angel visited the home of Mrs. Maggie Lee Chi'isty j Thursday night and claimed her lit j tie son, Sam. I|e had been sick for quite a while with spinal minengitis He leaves a mother, one sister, Eloise and his twin brother, Dan, besides the many friends. He. was 13 years, (» months and 15 days old. He was loved by all that knew him. He was laid to rest at Providence church Saturday afternoon. The people showed that they loved him by the many pretty flowers they brought. Last Sunday was a bad day for the doctors who cannot pick their roads. Dr. Lovelace's car had to be pulled out three times Sunday. It takes time, wisdom and prayer to do this. And wherever this is done the expenses of the church are paid with comparative ease and by prac tically all its members and that with out delay and undue and unfair strain on any of its membership. On the other hand, where every member is not canvassed and a sub scription not secured a comparatively few have to bear the burden, pay ments are not promptly met, finances run behind, the year closes with sal aries and benevolences partly unpaid, or the faithful few have to strain themselves to pay an extra amount to make up for those who would have helped had they been asked to do at the right time and in the right way. Brethren, these things ought not so to be. Give the Every Member Can vas a fair, prayerful, earnest faith ful trial, then witness the blessed sat isfactory benefits on your ehurch fi nancially and spiritually. The writer has frequently wit nessed the painfully embarrassing ef fects where the every member canvas was not practiced. He has also wit nessed with delight the satisfactory and beneficial results temporally and spiritually where the every member canvas is the annual custom of the church. The Every Member Canvas is well worth more than the time and effort it takes to make it. end witji Messrs. Joseph and Aud die McDaniel.
