TO HARD SURFACE ROAD BAT CAVE TO HENDERSONVILLE (Hendersonville News) The county authorities in session with state highway officials yester day entered into contracts whereby the county is to lend the state money with which to hard surface the Bat Cave road, this being the third of ithree recent road projects that will 'give Henderson county approximate ly a one million dollar road build ing program. A few days ago the officials con tracted with the state for the build ing of the Greenville road to the Carolina line and the Spar tanburg road to the Polk county line. These roads will entail an 'ture of nearly a half a million dol lars or $490,000 and the Bat Cave ,road will require the other half, or $510,000, according to careful esti mates. Officials stated that the present Bat Cave road would be used as the 'main route of the paved highways. ! It is understood that a contract Iwill be awarded by state officials for the building of the Greenville road next Monday. TOWARD THE HEIGHTS ! In all the realms of earth or sky may our path lead from midnight to fairest morn, and from rosy dawn to highest noon. May we daily greet our friends, our foes, our fears with a "smiling Godward face," and our task with joy. May our sorrows, dis appointments, and disaster work in us their enduring lessons. May a great purpose spur us forward with heavenly insistence until we scale the ► heights in front. May we distinguish ► the permanent from the transient, t and hold fast the truth that abides, f May the inspiration and fellowship of ► the world's noblest souls of every age be ours for all time. May a Heaven sent vision reveal to us our truest, divinest selves and our immortal des tiny. May the winsome, compassion ate spirit of the man of Nazareth ■ dwell increasingly in our hearts for - ever.—A prayer by Merritt Augustus Farren. 1 ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE i Having qualified as administrator of the estate of J. Pruette, of Ellenboro, J was paid a nice compliment oy the J Cleveland News, of recent issue, as follows: Hon. G. B. Pruette, of Ellenboro, was in the city Wednesday. Mr. Pruette is the oldest postmaster in point of years of service in the western section of North Carolina. For some months past he has been assisting the new postmaster, Mr. j Padgett, at Ellenboro, Mn the work j of the office. j Mr. Pruette is a native of Cleve- , land county, being the son of John Pruette, of Boiling Springs, and he is a brother of Rev. L. R. Pruette, Char- , lotte. Mr. Pruette is a great worker in the Baptist church. He is a pioneer in Sunday School work, having or ganized Sunday schools in the churches of the Sandy Run Associa tion and made Sunday schools grow where no Sunday schools were be fore. For more than 20 years he has been clerk of the Sandy Run Associa tion. At the last meeting of the As sociation he tendered his resignation, and it was with great difficulty that he was persuaded to continue his work. Strong resolutions were pass ed in appreciation of the great serv ice he had rendered his church and his Master. Mr. Pruette is also a prominent Republican, having represented Ruth erford county in the legislature. I Shelby always welcomes Mr. he can find time to visit in her midst. CLARK HOWELL COMING Chimney Rock, N. C., Feb. 8. —An invitation will be extended to Clark Howell, publisher of the Atlanta Constitution, to speak before a local club, during his summer vacation this year which he invariably spends in Western North Carolina. When he was here last year his remarks upon the progress of Western North Car olina were considered very optimis tic, but time has proved they were not large enough. Not only his pre dictions have come true, but the march of progress has exceeded his most sanguine expectations. BUYS NEW BUNGALOW i Chimney Rock, N. C., Feb. B. Thomas T. C., Feb. 8. — One of the most useful and interest ing public documents received at the Lake Lure reading room is entitled "Vegetable Planting Guide for West ern North Carolina," issued by the North Carolina Extension Service, 1 of which I. O. Schaub, of Raleigh, is Director. On the front page is a picture of tomato growing on a moun tain farm. The publication is pro duced and distributed free to farm ers through co-operation of the United States Department of Agri culture and the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineer ing. Those in Rutherford county in terested in vegetable planting have been supplied through Dr. Lucius B. Morse, with copies of the pamphlet. ALL OUT OF SORTS? So Was This Forest City Woman Who Tells Her Experience. All too often women accept their pains and aches as natural to their sex. They fail to realize that weak kidneys are often to blame for that backache, those headaches, dizzy spells and that tired, depressed fiel ipg. Thousands have found new nealth and strength by helping the weakened kidneys with Doan's Pills— a stimulant diuretic. This Forest City case is one of many: Mr?. G. B. Enloe says: "My kid neys sometimes acted too often then again they were inactive. I had head aches a good deal, which were usu ally followed by severe dizzy spells, when specks danced before my eyes. My back was weak and sore and if I stooped, a sharp pain darted across the small of it. That tired, weary feeling never left me until I started to use Doan's Pills. One box, from the Long Drug Co., cured me." 60c, at all dealers. Foster-Mil burn Co., Mfrs., Buffalo, N. Y. ma I HARRILL A.
