Mothers Read This! Columbia, S. C.—"Two years ago I was in a very weak and rundown con diti on. At times the suf fering was so intense that I was unable to W keep on my ft L' § feet long. A U Finally my M VlvV sister-in-law \,i Klt /f urged me to M' r try Dr. Pierce's I y,j Favorite Pre scrip tion. I took three bot tles and it did wonders for me, in build ing me up, regulating every organ of my body, and giving me strength. A little baby girl came to our home some months ago, a perfectly healthy, good natured child, weighing 10 lbs., so both my child and myself received great benefit." Mrs. S. W. W. Webb, ► City Manager i; $400,000 LAKE LURE HOTEL UNDER CONSTRUCTION $2,000,000 Tourist Hotel To Follow —Work On Lake Lure Town to Begin Shortly. Chimney Rock, N. C., Feb. 20. — With the completion of preliminar ies by landscape engineers under di rection of E. S. Draper, of Char lotte, actual construction has begun on the $400,000 Lake Lure hotel, a firesafe building, to be erected by Potter and Shackelford of Greenville, S. C. Plans which are now being drawn for the large $2,000,000 tour ist hotel sponsored by the Continen tal Hotel Corporation, owners of the famous Shelton Hotel in New York, are expected to be ready shortly, but the smaller hotel will be rushed to completion and opened to the public, it is expected, during this season. In addition to the above, construc tion will also shortly be commenced , by the same contractors, on one solid block of two-story brick store build ings, followed closely by the bus ter minal, boat pier, bathing beach and dancing pavilion. This town will be known as lake Lure, and is being de veloped under the supervision of emi nent landscape architects with orders to create a model town around an idea of civic centre, the central plaza of which will contain the famous bottomless pools. A crew of forty-six engineers, un der direction of Charles H. Moore, are actively engaged in surveying and sub-dividing the townsite. The de velopment company is spending more than five million dollars total to carry out their ideas of what a moun tain-lake pleasure resort of national scope should be. The 13 square miles of territory covered by their property owned fee simple has there on a number of the major scenic at tractions in this region. Some great pictures are coming to the Movie. HIS OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT In about as interesting a political statement as usually gets into print, R. R. ("Our Bob") Reynolds, of )Robert Asheville, makes formal announce ment in this week's Courier of his candidacy for the seat in the United States Senate now held by Senator Overman. His statement is a frank solicita tion for votes, with the assurance that he will "fight for the things my party believes in and my friends and neighbors want done." Nobody in particular urged him to run, he says, but since his ardent ambition has been made known, many assurances of strong support have been forth coming. "Our Bob" is popular in Ruther ford county and will receive a strong support. His formal statement fol lows: To the Democratic Voters of North Carolina: I am a candidate for the Demo cratic nomination for United States Senator for North Carolina. If you intend to participate in the Demo cratic primary next June, you will please consider this an earnest per sonal request to vote for me for United States Senator. This plain blunt announcement of my candidacy and personal appeal for your sup port may or may not tickle the ears of the groundlings and may cause the judicious and dignified in and around Washington City to grieve. How ever, this may be, "my hat is in the ring" and I shall carry on a vigorous campaign throughout the State till the election is over. I am writing to a great many of my friends and acquaintances and hope to meet and get acquainted with every voter personally during the campaign. Remember, any good word or kind act in my behalf be tween now and the primary will be appreciated and never forgotten. Having solicited your vote and support, it may not be amiss to tell you something of my prospects and purposes: While no one in particu lar urged me to offer for this high and honorable post, yet, since I have made known to my friends my ardent ambition to serve my State in the United States Senate I have had as surances of strong support from thousands of voters who have heard I wanted to make the race. I am much pleased and encouraged by the favorable consideration my candi dacy ha s received so far. While not, perhaps so great an honor as when Nathaniel Macon and Zeb Vance held that exalted position, the Senatorship is yet regarded high ly as a position of dignity and some degree of usefulness both to State and Nation. There doubtless be among you, those who feel that I am not a big enough man for it. I will say there have been times when I myself am none too sure of my fit ness, but I have the will to grow and serve. We know our political his tory, records the slaughter of many ambitious statesmen, not to mention politicians. For that Caesar was am bitious Brutus slew him. The De mocracy of North Carolina, if it sees fit, may take my measure; I can take a licking if I have to. The rank and file of Democrats of North Carolina never have favored conferring office for life, or com mitting to inner circles the award of honors without limit of time, in per petuality. The Democracy of my State does not owe me or any other man the Senatorship. lam frankly asking you to vote for me for this office, hoping if successful, in my laudable ambition, that I may be giv- LOCAL NEWS Gathered Here and There By Rev.
