Kistler and Others Like Lake Lure, July 25. (Spec.) Colonel T. L. Kirkpatrick, one of Charlotte's most prominent citizens and one of the best known orators of the Old North State, has accepted the invita tion to be one of the principal speakers at Lake Lure, July 30, upon the occasion of the big celebration marking comple tion of paving upon state high way, N. C. 20. Acceptance from a large number of mayors of cities along the route, newspaper publishers and prominent cit izens, have already been re ceived by David Lindsay, sec retary of the Rutherford Coun ty Club, under the auspices of which this gathering will be held. Frank Page, chairman of the State Highway Commis sion; A. E. Kistler, commission er for the eighth district; J. G. Stikeleather, commissioner of the ninth district, have an nounced their intention to be present, as has Congressman Zebulon Weaver of Asheville. The program, beginning with a band concert at 10:45 Satur day morning, will give the many hundreds, expected to attend, the opportunity to en joy various activities. The speakers will be heard at 11 o'clock and this will be fol lowed by luncheon to the dis tinguished guests at 12:30 in Lake Lure Inn. Even more colorful will be the afternoon session, with a great water carnival and re getta to be staged, beginning at 2:30 p. m. Keen competi tion between boys' camps of Western North Carolina is an ticipated in a dozen or more events, the winners of the high est number of points to receive a handsome loving cup donat ed by the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. There are swim ming and diving events, also, open to all comers. Silver and bronze medals will be award ed individual winners by the Lake Lure organization. Fire works will start at 8:30 p. m. Asheville merchants have al so assisted in making the event a success by the donation of merchandise presents. These firms are Denton's, All Sport Shop, Royes, and M. V. Moore and Company. MISS PADGETT ENTERTAINS July 18.—Miss Ruby Padgett entertained a large number of her friends at a party which was given Saturday night. AN ADVANCING REG ION Progress in that section of North Carolina between Cliff side, Forest City, Rutherford ton and Chimney Rock is as pro nounced as in any section of the Old North State.. For many years the mills of that section have given it distinction in industry, but with highway de velopment such as the section experienced within the last few years the towns of the region have grown rapidly, small industries appear and the great development at Lake Lure has brought into existence a resort destined to play an im portant part in the region's ex pansion.—Spartanburg Herald. 2,200 ATTEND B. & L. PICNIC AT LAKE LURE ON JULY 20 North Carolina League is Host to National Building and Loan Convention Lake Lure, July 25. —In the cool shade of the grove which surrounds the Bottomless Pools at Lake Lute, a crowd of 2,200 persons, composed of delegates of the National Building and Loan convention and residents of Asheville, gathered Wednesday after noon, July 20 for an old-fashioned barbecue. The North Carolina League of Building and Loan associations was host for the occasion. A long pit, dug into the ground and covered with a grill, furnished meats of many varieties, done to a turn. The crowd, overflowing the benches at long tables laid in the woods, was forced to seek what seats it could find. Before the barbecue dinner was completed the thirty-five pipers of the Oklahoma City kilted lasses be gan their concert. Standing at atten tion in the center of the picnic ground, they played for more than a half-hour until the speeches began. Col. Kirkpatrick Speaks First on the program was Col. T. L. Kirkpatrick, of Charlotte, far famed for his oratorical powers. Col. Kirkpatrick dwelt at length on the virtues of North Carolina. He fol lowed the state from the days of re construction to its present economic greatness. He cited the growth of good roads and schools. He rejoiced that North Carolina had been so fortunate as to have the optional convention of building and loan men and he praised the work of George Wooten, of Hickory, N. C., in bringing the convention to Asheville. C. C. Knight, of Asheville, was extolled for his work in arrang ing the barbecue. Col. Kirkpatrick was introduced by O. C. Erwin, of Rutherfordton. Sam P. Burton, of Asheville, wel comed the crowd to Lake Lure and to Chimney Rock on the part of Dr. L. B. Morse, head of the Lake Lure development, who could not attend. Mr. Burton told the delegates Ashe ville wanted more people of their kind to come here to live. C. E. Redpker, of Windsor, Ont., invited tlfe delegates to come to the Canadian border city for their next convention. Varied Recreation The remainder of the afternoon was spent according to the wishes of the guests. C. 20, hard surface highway stretching in unbroken smoothness from the mountains of the west ern part of the state to the eastern coast. A gigantic jubilee, celebrating the completion of this highway, is to be held at Lake Lure, in Rutherford County, on July 30th, in which notables present from throughout the Old North State will take off their hats to N. C. 20 as an example of highway achievement in North Carolina. COUNTY CLUB TO LAKE LURE FOR CELEBRATION July Meeting of Club to be Held in Celebration of Op ening of Route 20 Lake Lure, July 25.—The July meeting of the Rutherford County Club will be held at Lake Lure on next Saturday. The Club Luncheon will be served at 12:30 at Lake Lure Inn. A number of guests of prominence have been invited by the club to be present at this meeting. Among them are the mayors of all the towns along Route 20. Plans are being made for a thor oughly enjoyable occasion and indica tions are that the meeting will be one of the best ever held by the club. The consumption of ice cream per person last year amounted to 2.77 gallons. Wouldn't that freeze you. E., Woodland, president of the State Association of County Commissioners was here Friday, July 15, to arrange for the meeting of the county offic-J ials at Chimney Rock, August 9th, 10th and 11th. Headquarters of the j State association will be at Lake Lure | Inn. From 200 to 300 county officials and their families are expected to at tend. Seventy counties of the state are members of the State Association of County Commissioners. The open-) ing session will be held Tuesday night, August 9. The meetings will be held in the new school building which is about 200 yards from Lake Lure Inn. County Superintendent of Schools, Clyde A. Erwin, will deliver the address of welcome. The secretary will make his report and other busi ness matters will be considered. Mr. John L. Skinner of Littleton, is sec retary-treasurer of the association. Wednesday morning, August 10th will be the president's address and an open discussion on county busi ness and affairs. Mr. B. B. Dough tery of Boone, a member of the I State Equalization Board is expect i ed to deliver an address. The party will leave the meeting at 12:30 noon for a luncheon on top of the rock and an address by Hon. Clyde R. Hoey of Shelby. The afternoon will be spent in sight seeing around the 'rock, etc. At 4 P. M. the party will returned to the lake for a boat ride on the famous lake. This will consume one and one-half hours. Following this the party will go to Asheville for a banquet at one of the leading hotels of the Mountain City. Mr. A. J. Maxwell of the Corporation Commission will deliver an address at the banquet. Following this the party will return to Lake Lure for the night. Thursday morning, August 11 at 10:00 o'clock Miss Frances Camp of the Bureau of County Organiza- J tion, State Board of Welfare, Ra- f Leigh will speak. Miss Camp is a native of Rutherford county. Fol lowing this will be reports, elec tion of officers, selection of the next convention city and other busi ness matters. Mr. Woodland announced a nom inating committee as follows: Mr. Addison Hewlett, New Hanover county; H. E. Rufty, Rowan coun ty; and L. A. Raney, Wayne county. The public will be invited to any and all sessions. Rutherford coun ty will do everything possible to make the visiting county officials feel welcome and have a good time. Mr. Woodland is a member of the County Government Advisory Commission and lives\ at Morehead City, Carteret county. SI.OO per Year in Advance DIGNITARIES WILL ATTEND ROAD OPENING Lake Lure to Be Scene of Di versified Program Lasting All Day DAWN OF NEW ERA SEEN County Celebrates Completion of Main Street of North Carolina Lake Lure, July 25.—From elab orate plans, recently announced, it is indicated that many dignitaries and notables from the length and breadth of the Old North State will grace the mammoth jubilee to be held at Lake Lure on July 30, when there will be fittingly celebrated the completion of State Highway No. 20, North Carolina's appropriately des ignated "Main Street" and the first great paved highway stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Western part of the State to the At lantic seaboard down East. There has been lined up to attend the celebration Frank Page, chair man of the State Highway Commis sion, high government officials, not able speakers and the flower of North Carolina orators, mayors of cities and towns along the entire i course of famous N. C. 20, and many other distinguished guests. An elaborate water carnival, fea turing all manner of speed boat races, sailing boat races, canoe events, as well as novel water stunts, is now be ing arranged by a special committee headed by Reese Combs, of Chimney Rock, director of the Chimney Rock Camp for Boys, members of which are planning to participate in the big event. Palm Tippy, five-year-old diving wonder, now at Lake Lure, will be a prominent participant in the diving and swimming events, and is expected to be one of the draw ing cards of the occasion, due to his reputation, achieved by a seventy foot dive at Atlantic City, made when he was only four years old. The lad is a full fledged member of the Red Cross life saving corps, and the holder of a Carnegie medal for life saving. Many Dignitaries At least 300 dignitaries are ex pected to take part in the event and to be guests of the Rutherford County- Club and leading business and pro fessional men of the county, under whose auspices the celebration is be ing arranged. Luncheon will be serv ed at Lake Lure Inn at 1 o'clock. A special speakers stand and band stand will be constructed at a point of vantage near Lake Lure. The joint bands of Spindale and Cliffside are to furnish music, arrangements for this feature being in charge of Charles H. Haynes, of Cliffside. Dav id Lindsay, of Spindale, has been ap pointed head of a committee upon luncheon arrangements. Assisting Mr. Combs in arrange ments for the day's aquatic festivi ties, jvill be Ned Washburn, who kas charge of all craft and water sports at Lake Lure, and Frank P. Stratford, of Rutherfordton. An elaborate display of fireworks is to be staged late in the evening, the first event of this nature ever held at Lake Lure. Committee Named Clyde A. Erwin, C. F. Gold, and N. C. Harris, all of Rutherfordton, form the central committee of ar rangements as designated by Charles H. Haynes, president of the Ruther ford County Club. As N. C. 20 is the first highway fully paved entirely across the State, the ceremony marking its completion is regarded as one of the biggest events in the history of the common wealth signifying as it does the closer union of the three great divisions* Highlands, Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
