I Harbin Haynes of Lincoln County has increased his cows from three to twenty during the past year be cause of the demand for milk in his section.' MUST IMPROVE COTTON TO FIT MILL NEEDS i Raleigh, X. C., Jan. 2o.—While the cotton growers of southeastern Unit ed States produce annually, five mil lion bales, the amount generally con sumed by the textile mill? of this section, the mills have to go to other sections for about half of the cotton ' they use. ! "We have found through a care-j ful survey that the growers of cot-1 ton in the southeastern section of j our country are producing about the ' same number of bales of cotton that j the mills of this section consume," says Dr. R. Y. Winters, director of the North Carolina Experiment Sta-' tion. "Yet we have found also that these mills must go to some other sections for about half of the cot ton that they use. This means that more than half of our cotton is ex ported and more than half of the mill needs is brought in from other growers. This is due to one thing. Our cottons are too short in length of staple. More than 85 per cent of our production is less than an inch in length." While these facts do not apply strictly to North Carolina yet the same thing is generally true in this I State. The mills of the southeast ! must hava about 30 per cent of their I consumption in cottons of one inch ] or longer. The type that is being produced at present will supply less than half of this demand. Farmers of North Carolina are making ex cellent progress in adopting cottons like the improved Cleveland Big 801 l and the Mexican Big 8011. The latter variety is especially adapted CET UP NIGHTS?
