THE COUNTY CLUB
DISCUSSES ROAD
BUILDING IN COUNTY
February Meeting of Ruther
ford County Club Held at
Gilkey School.
Gilkey, Feb. 22. —The February
. meeting of the Rutherford County
j Club met at Gilkey School audi-
Jtorium Tuesday at 1 p. m. The menu
I and service were excellent, being
! served by the ladies of the Gilkey
; Methodist church. The attendance
i was good. After the announcements,
j Mr. C. F. Cline, member of the pro
j gram committee stated that there
was no special speaker but the com
! mittee desired the club to discuss the
J road situation in the county, espe
cially with reference to Highway No.
' 10. He thought the county should
urge the State Highway Commission
(to improve Highway No. 10 at once.
\ Attorney M. L. Edwards was the
j speaker. He said we should pre
(sent a "united front" and get more
j roads. He also stated that the roads
!to Marion, Tryon and Morganton
; should all be, at least oiled and
: treated this summer, so they would
! be dependable all the year around,
j This should be done at once. He also
j thought that Rutherford was not get
j ting her just share of the State
j Highway funds. He stated that he
j had information from the State
! Highway Commission that the Mor
ganton road would-be improved this
| summer. Mr. Edwards stated that
j stone was being placed now to im
; prove the highway via Caroleen and
' Cliffside to the South Caroline line.
Mr. W. G. Harris, chairman of the
i
i Board of County Commissioners
' stated that he had a conference with
I Highway Commissioners, A. M. Kist
i ler last week but that he got no
! definite promise from Mr. Kisler re
! lative to road improvement. He also
I stated that the County had already
j received about $286,000 of Highway
j No. 20 funds, due the county from
i the State Highway Commission for
' funds advanced and there was still
t
; due the county about SIIB,OOO which
' should be paid next year.
It was thought by various speak
ers that some of the funds due the!
! county from the State Highway
| Commission on the No. 20 might be
i used to improve Highway No. 19
and later be replaced from the '
state fund. A special road commit
tee was appointed to work with com- i
mittees from the two Kiwanis Clubs
of the county and the County Com
missioners to do everything possible
to see that Highway No. 19 and the
Morganton road were improved soon
as possible; Messrs. C. F. Cline.
chairman; (). C. Erwin and O. J. Hol
ler. ,\
The club voted to hold the March t
meeting in Forest City.
