THE COUNTY CLUB DISCUSSES ROAD BUILDING IN COUNTY February Meeting of Ruther ford County Club Held at Gilkey School. Gilkey, Feb. 22. —The February . meeting of the Rutherford County j Club met at Gilkey School audi- Jtorium Tuesday at 1 p. m. The menu I and service were excellent, being ! served by the ladies of the Gilkey ; Methodist church. The attendance i was good. After the announcements, j Mr. C. F. Cline, member of the pro j gram committee stated that there was no special speaker but the com ! mittee desired the club to discuss the J road situation in the county, espe cially with reference to Highway No. ' 10. He thought the county should urge the State Highway Commission (to improve Highway No. 10 at once. \ Attorney M. L. Edwards was the j speaker. He said we should pre (sent a "united front" and get more j roads. He also stated that the roads !to Marion, Tryon and Morganton ; should all be, at least oiled and : treated this summer, so they would ! be dependable all the year around, j This should be done at once. He also j thought that Rutherford was not get j ting her just share of the State j Highway funds. He stated that he j had information from the State ! Highway Commission that the Mor ganton road would-be improved this | summer. Mr. Edwards stated that j stone was being placed now to im ; prove the highway via Caroleen and ' Cliffside to the South Caroline line. Mr. W. G. Harris, chairman of the i i Board of County Commissioners ' stated that he had a conference with I Highway Commissioners, A. M. Kist i ler last week but that he got no ! definite promise from Mr. Kisler re ! lative to road improvement. He also I stated that the County had already j received about $286,000 of Highway j No. 20 funds, due the county from i the State Highway Commission for ' funds advanced and there was still t ; due the county about SIIB,OOO which ' should be paid next year. It was thought by various speak ers that some of the funds due the! ! county from the State Highway | Commission on the No. 20 might be i used to improve Highway No. 19 and later be replaced from the ' state fund. A special road commit tee was appointed to work with com- i mittees from the two Kiwanis Clubs of the county and the County Com missioners to do everything possible to see that Highway No. 19 and the Morganton road were improved soon as possible; Messrs. AUTO MANGLES MAN IN ROAD S. E. Head of Melvin Hill, Dies After Being Hit by Auto. Rutherfordton, Feb. 27. —S. Ed Head, 65, of the Melvin Hill section of Polk county, 14 miles southwest of Rutherfordton, was struck Wed nesday night by an automobile driven by a neighbor named Webb, knocked down, dragged about 30 feet and died in about five minutes. His teeth were knocked out and a large hole was matie in his head. He had been to church. Young Webb took some girls home from church and was returning in a car and did not see Mr. Head, who was in the road. The accident was declared un avoidable. _ | The deceased was buried at Mel s vin Hill church. He was the father of Dr. W. T. Head of Polk county. [ FLORENCE MILLS * . I I MISS SARAH WALKER DEAD BOSTIC, R-4, Feb. 27.—The death angel visited our community recently and claimed Mrs. Sarah Walker. She was only sick a few hours. Her hus band, Mr. Tom Walker preceded her to the grave about two years ago. This is four deaths in the family in about two years. She leaves two hoys and one daughter. Mrs. Walker was a good Christian woman and will be missed in our community. She was buried at Cane Creek Baptist church, of which she had been a member for years. Asheville, Feb. 27.—The Asheville Maroons nosed out the Forest City Hi quintet here Thursday night in the semi-finals of the west. The score was 25 to 18. Asheville scored first on a field goal and a free throw. Forest City scored twice on free throws to make the score 3 to 2. Asheville shot another field goal and Forest City come back to shoot one also to make the score five to four. The score was 1 to 5 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Forest City scored six points to nine for Ashe ville to make the score, 1G to 11 in favor of Asheville. By the great defensive work of Forest City in the third quarter, Asheville scored only (wo points. Asheville was still leading, 18 to 14 at the end of the third quarter. In the first few minutes of play in the last quarter, Asheville got a safe lead and then the game was slowed up on account of the many toss ups called by the referee. Thompson lead the scoring for Asheville with nine points while Moss, Forest City's rangy center, dis played some brilliant floor worK and led the scoring with seven points to his credit.
