ROACH Editor THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 1928 —————— j BAPTIST CHURCH NOTES We were delighted to have a num ber of visitors in Sunday School last Sunday. Some of them were with us for the first time while there were some who used to be members of our Sunday School who came back to visit. Mr. and Mrs. Blanton and two children of the First Baptist church of Spartanburg, S. C., were among the visitors last Sunday. The Intermediate Department had charge of the closing period of the Sunday School last Sunday morning and presented a fine program. On next Sunday morning at the close of the Sunday School the Young People and Adult Department will present a unique program that will be out of the ordinary and very We trust that eveVy member of each Department will be in the auditorium for the beginning of the program. The pastor, Rev. R. C. Smith was away last week in a meeting at Smith's Grove and reports a very good series of meetings there. In this absence Rev. W. C. Lynch filled the pulpit Sunday morning and brought a fine message on "The Love that He read from the 21st chap ter of St. John. A large number from here attend ed the Sandy Run Associational Sutv day School Convention Sunday af ternoon at Forest City. The four B. Y. P. U.'s are having interesting meetings each Sunday evening at 6:30. The Baker Union had charge of the prayer service last Wednesday night and presented a fine program. The pastor preached Sunday eve ning. He read from several passages of the Scriptures. The first was Heb. 11: 8-19, then from Gen. 11: 12 and 13. His subject was "Waiting upon Lord." The Church as well as the entire town regrets to have Mr. O. G. More head and family leave us. They are Roving this week to Gastonia. The \(\ E. L. Class, of which Mrs. More head was a member and officer gave a picnic in her honor last week. Rev. and Mrs. Smith have for their guest Mr. Smith's mother, Mrs. Smith of Knoxville, Tenn. The B. Y. P. U.'s are having a class this week meeting each evening at the church. Mr. Putnam, the B. Y. P. U. Director is teaching. Mr. R. C. Smith, of Avondale, is now with us as under taker. Roach began on last Monday morning the annual inspection of premises at Av ondale and Cliffside preparatory to the annual awarding of prizes for the best kept and improved yards and premises. Mrs. Freeman lives at Avondale while the other two mem bers of the Committee are of Cliff- ( side. Prizes will be awarded at Av- j ondale Thursday evening at 7:30 af ter which the committee will come j back to the church of the Cliffside | colored people and award their priz-! es. On Friday night prizes will be awarded to the people of Cliffside at the Town Hall. The bands of the two towns will render special music and the colored' people report that they will have music by their quar tet and general choir. This is always enjoyable event. A list of the winners may be published next week. "JACK" BLANTON WINS I Lawrence "Jack" Blanton, young light-weight boxer of Cliffside, won the most spectacular victory of his career Saturday night, August 4, at | Chesnee, knocking Lloyd "Parris," the 170 lb. boxer of Chesnee out in 1 and 1-2 rounds. Although "Parris," had more than thirty pounds advantage, "Jack," out classed him from start to finish, Par ris suffering two knock-downs in the first round, the bell saving him at the count of five the last time. At the beginning of the second round it was evident that it was but a few seconds before the end. At the end of one minute, "Jack" com pletely finished with a clean knock out, which marked the most thrilling fight of his career. PROVIDENCE NEWS Forest City, R-2, Aug. 6. —Mr. R. C. Revival in Progress at Bethany Local and Personal Items Forest City, R-2, Aug. 7.—This section was visited by a nice rain Sunday afternoon. Messrs. John Doggett, J. P. Lewis and Lester Toms arrived home urday after a weeks camping at White Lake. While there they visit led Wilmington, Raleigh and other j places of interest. The meeting is going on this week at Bethany. We are having two ser- day, morning at 11 and eve ning at 8 o'clock. The pastor is being assisted by Rev. Lawson Wright, of Alexander. We will be glad for any and all to attend. You will be wele come. Come and bring a friend. Mrs. Mary Lee Marlow and two children of Marion, spent last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Green.
