Gillespie which was prepared for the
Asheville division meeting, in Ashe
ville. Friday evening, on the prog
ress and accomplishments of the For
est City Club:
Report of District Trustee Gillespie
on Accomplishments of Forest
City Kiwanis Club, Asheville Divis
ion Meeting.
Forest City, Sept, 7,
attempting nothing of a spectacular
nature, the Forest City club has en
joyed a delightful series of worth
while programs during the present
year, and has accomplished some out
standing constructive work that has
proven successful in the building of
the club personnel, closer relations
between town and country, higher
standards for schools and teachers, in
the direct interest of our privileged
and underprivileged children, phys
ically, mentally and morally. In the
sponsoring of the Boy Scout move
ment, school athletics and clinics for
the cripples.
"A larger acquaintance has been
acquired through joint meetings, held
with neighboring clubs each alter
j nate month of the year, featuring a
spirit of comradrie and fellowship,
| stimulating social and commercial in-
I terests and an interchange of policies
| and methods that could be obtained
|in no other way. One joint meeting
I with the Tryon club, two with the
I Rutherfordton club and a five club
meeting at Lake Lure, on July 4,
when members of Hendersonville,
Tryon, Rutherfordton, Shelby, Gas
|tonia clubs and their families met
with our club for an all day picnic,
when we were privileged to have with
jus Gov. Pugh, Lieut, Gov. G. Lyle
| Jones and Field Representative El
| more. •
i "In the interests of our town and
surrounding rural commupnities the
club has sponsored the' building of
a 10,000 bushel capacity sweet po
tato curing house, a new curb mark
et building, that is prospering and
satisfying both farmer and city
housekeepers, with regular offerings
two days each week. In the absence
jof any commercial organization the
! club has functioned as the Forest
| City Chamber of Commerce, and
through its industrial committee, has
gained much worthwhile publicity at
j home and abroad. Has been largely
j instrumental, through land' options,
j interesting of R. R. officials, and con
| conservative advertising, always with
an eye single to the beautifying of
the town, in having the Agricultural
Department of the U. S. Government
proclaim Forest City as "One of the
ten best planned cities in the U. S.
"Besides adhering faithfully to
| program suggestions by District and
j International, we have overlooked
no opportunity to widen our scope of
usefulness in the entertainment of
the champion High School base-ball
team of North Carolina, teachers in
our public schools, city and county
civic interests, Boy Scouts of Amer
ica, and all delegations of officials
and business people on itineraries
through our town. The most recent
of which was a luncheon for the
Southwest Virginia Motorcade of
75 business representatives from the
Old Dominion State. The latest move
of the club was the occupying of one
of the handsomest banquet halls in
W. N. C., located on the South Side
of the business circle, where the

PURCHASE 7,000 CANS
j
J
Ellenboro, Sept. 10. : —A total of
. 7,000 tin cans have been purchased
this season by the Ellenboro Cannery
■ Association and distributed to its
; members at a great saving to them.
i It is believed that the association has
j done much to stimulate more can
! ning within the community this year
j by furnishing cans at a cheaper price
I and is doing much to influence a
j better live-at-home program with
in the township.
! The association which is a federa
j tion of many small canning units
| within the community and organized
| several months ago, now has a total
i of forty members. Two of the mem
j bers have canned more than 1,000
I cans each.
j Very little canning has been done
• this year under the association's
• brand. However, plans are being
1 made to can for the market another
I year.
! The teacher of agriculture purch
; ased and distributed the cans to the
people of t&e community without

CARD BROUGHT TO LIGHT 1
i
j Mr. J. C. Scruggs recently found,
! while going through the papers of
Mr. William Martin, deceased, a pos
: tal card mailed at Buffalo Mills to
Mr. Martin at Burnt Chimney in
; 1875. This card was mailed by the
i agent of the Carolina Central Rail
road, now the Seaboard, at Buffalo
| Mills, four miles east of Shelby, and
I was addressed to Mr. Wm. Martin,
' Burnt Chimney, N. C. Mr. Martin
was notified that he had a lot of
machinery, weight 2870 pounds, at
the depot there on which the freight
was $8.98. The card was dated Aug
ust 16, 1875.
: Buffalo Mills was at that time the
j terminal of the Carolina Central rail
| road, and it was necessary that Mr.
j Martin transport his machinery by
i wagon to Burnt Chimney, now Forest
i City. The Carolina Central, or Sea
j board, did not reach Forest City un
; til several years later.
An interesting item about this card
| is the comparison in freight rates of
! then and today.
