CORN CRACKER GRATEFUL AS YULETIDE APPROACHES Shelby, R-5, Dec. 10. —While in the toils of poverty and affliction, yet, with the passing of Thanksgiv ing and the approach of Yuletide, I have abundant occasion for being jubilant and grateful. In the first place, I am blessed with every mental endowment I ev er had, am able to see, hear some, although somewhat deaf, and am able to walk about, drive a horse, or ride in a buzzwagon if somebody will furnish transportation. In the proffer of an act of kind deeds, I find that people of good blood and current gentility are kind and courteous, while people raised in squalid pover ty and who were reared on a diet of soap grease, are inclined to take on airs. The finest car in which I ever rode was from Durham to Raleigh, N. C., by courtesy of a multi-million aire. But just try being afoot on the highway, and let a yokel driving a decaying amublance known as a forty dollar Ford, and the proud Jehu arrayed in shoddy hand-me downs, and see how he will swell with inflated arrogance. Not that I am so saintly, but I daily and rev erently read the Holy Scriptures. Often, I think of Job when a recip ient of distress and calamity, saying that in his extremity he was regarded with lofty disdain by people whose fathers he would have disdained to allow to associate with the dogs that guarded his flock. Let a man lose his manly strength and agility, and a certain gang re-enact the jackass walking up and kicking the dying lion. When quite a young boy, I remember a witty character who spent the night at our home in Ken tucky. He was white-haired and had other evidences of age. Upon being j asked his age, his reply was, "I have out-lived my friends and cons titution." This was funny to me at the time, but now, to some extent, a matter of realization. During recent political campaign, I was something of an insurgent, for which I offer neither excuse nor apology. A man descended from pio neers who wrested the fair domain of Kentucky from wild beases and wilder men, is not given to taking dictation from some imaginary po litical leader who was in a snug shel ter when it rained wisdom. But the election passed into history, and not COURTNEY'S 5c to SI.OO STORES HEADQUARTERS FOR CHRISTMAS GOODS You will have to come and look to see the extensive line we have on display. Next morn ing the sun rose as usual, the stars | spangled the heavens, the moon wax- j ed and warned as aforetime, and we j were not beset by the woes of "nig ger domernation." I helped avert such calamities when part of the A 1 Smith contingent were puking and puling in the toils of Marion Butler ism, Palmer and Bucknerism, and repuditing the policy of the policy of the great evangel of Jeffersonian Democracy, W. J. Bryan. But the smoke of battle has lift ed, prohibition is vindicated, and by the Eternal, we mean to see that it is enforced. Nothing has ever been the matter since it was incorporated into Constitution, except time-serving and cowardice of judiciary and po lice. I helped elect an officer that has at least rudimentary, "insides," and when he lies down on his job, if he does, we'll elect another. Cleve land has a gpod sheriff, but the po litical ring slated a man who was ex-1 pected to sleep at the switch, but the j electorate routed the ring, horse, foot, and dragon. Now, while the choir sings, "The ; Old Ship of Zion," we wish to re store all political backsliders, and our motto to one and all is the mes sage of Tiny Tim, "May God Bless Us, every One." To management of Courier and j clientele, we tender a message of peace and good will, with earnest wishes for a Happy New Year.
