On January 1, 1928, the Dominion ; of Canada had 1,265,869 telephones, j 1 U During the year 1927 there were 1 777,144 telephones added to the ex isting systems in the United States. i' Direct telephone service was in- j : augurated this past summer be tween Czechoslovakia and Hun- j garv. ( Telephone service has recently j been made available between all parts of Belgium and the entire j 1 country of Sweden i 1 More than 75,000,000 completed 1 telephofie conversations are han dled daily by the telephone com panies in this country. On June 1 oT this year the Bell System had 328,000 people engaged in giving telephone service. The ( Western Electric Company had 44,- 600 employees and the Bell Tele phone Laboratories 4,000 people. A PEACH ORCHARD IN NEW JERSEY last season produced ap proximately 175 carloads of peaches. The entire crop was sold by Long Distance telephone for ap proximately $200,000. The tele phone charges were $360. UNITED EFFORT i You have, without doubt, attended at some timg in your life a concert by a great symphony orchestra. Be fore you were a hundred or more musicians playing many different in struments. | What a pleasing experience it was, ! first to hear some wierd and beauti -1 ful note sounded on the woodwinds , or brasses, then to watch the myriad jof strings pick up the theme and ; elaborate upon it with wonderful and ! marvelous elequence, next to enjoy 'the finale with its exhilirating and i stirring rhythm, with every instru -1 ment following a different score, and all combining under the conductor's ! direction to produce some startling j effect upon the minds and hearts of the audience. | "Every man a great artist?" you say as you applaud enthusiastically. But a symphony orchestra is some thing more than a large group of tal ented individuals. It is a single great thing more than a large group of instrument in itself, played upon by the will of the conductor. It is the acme of unity of effort, of co-opera tion, of the direction of the will of the individual to the purpose of the whole organization. Notable achievement in art, in business, in life anywheje requires such unity of effort as this. Let's regard Forest City, our com munity, as a great orchestra, and ourselves as individual players. Let's endeavor to play our scores fault lessly, and recognize that such co-op eration is necessary to worth, accom plishment anywhere and everywhere. When we all get this point of view our community will have taken a long stride in its forward march.
