CABLE SPANNING
THE ATLANTIC
Use of New Type, Discovered by
Bell Scientists, Solves
Baffling Problem
Another dream of telephone engi
neers has been made possible of
achievement, namely that of tele
phoning across the Atlantic by
deep-sea cable. Until recently, no
one has known how to make a sub
marine cable that could carry
speech over so long a distance and
which could be laid in the great
depth of the ocean. The longest
deep-sea telephone cables which
have yet been laid are the Key
West-Havana cables, which are
only a little more than one hundred
miles in length.
Telephoning great distances over
land cableses made possible by the
use of telephone repeaters, or am
plifiers, which, placed at intervals
of about fifty miles along the cable,
serve to renew the strength of tele
phone currents. Obviously, it is
out of the question to place suffi
cient vacuum tube amplifiers in a
deep-sea ocean cable.
Up to a few years ago, telephon
ing across the Atlantic by cable
was practically impossible with a
structure of cable which could be
laid and repaired in deep waters,
but through the development of
new materials in the Bell Tele
phone Laboratories, telephone engi
neers now have the means to ac
complish this long desired end. One
of the important steps toward this
achievement was the discovery, a
few years ago, in the laboratories,
of a permalloy, an alloy of extraor
dinary magnetic properties, which
has been used with much success
for loading coils on land telephone
lines and which has been used in
the latest telegraph cables, as a
wrapping of wire or tape around
the conductor, serving a purpose
similar to that *of the loading
coils used on land lines. In the
meantime, the Bell Laboratories
engineers have been actively en
gaged in searching out new alloys
and in developing means for using
them. Their latest accomplishment
is the design of a cable suitable for
transatlantic telephony, and whicb
not only will permit of telephoning
across the Atlantic, but when not in
use for such conversations, can
serve for telegraph operation.
That such an announcement can
be made by the American Tele
phone' and Telegraph Company be
fore the cable has been manufac
tured, laid and tested, is particular
ly interesting, but the experiments
that have been made have proved
conclusively that such a cable is
feasible. Similarly, some fourteen
years ago, before the first trans
continental telephone line had
been completed in 1915, telephone
engineers knew in advance that
their efforts would be successful
and were able to make such an
announcement although an actual
conversation across the continent
had not at that time taken place.
