THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1929 j 1 MIDNIGHT SHOW AT ROMINA NEW YEAR'S EVE j I ■ I The big midnight show, to "watch I the old year out" on the night of; December 31st, will be something j new in Forest City entertainment. ; Manager Hughes for this big night.' has booked Ted Lewis and his band I in "Is Everybody Happy?" i Tiny Ann Pennington, long the > toast of Broadway, has always had j trouble in filling a theatre with. her voice. It was what is known j as a little voice, just as small as j herself. When she sang, the effect j to those in the first few rows was j delightful, but the patrons seated j further from the stage had to get J most of their satisfaction in feasting j their eyes on the ravishing little; spirit. | But talking picture technicians: now tell her that for talking pictures i her "little" voice is much better than j one of more robust proportions, j Through the magic of the Vitaphone j her voice, without a trace of strain , or stridency, now penetrates to every • part of the theatre in the sae delight- j quality thajt formerly lassailed the ears only of those down front. Ann is heard in song as a mem ber of the famous "Follies," in "Is i Everybody Happy?" the Warner) Bros, and Vitaphone production which stars Ted Lewis and features pri-i marily his singing and playing of j various instruments. This tuneful j production at midnight show, Decern- j ber 31st., with a wealth of syncopa-j tion and a love story that involves: Lewis, Miss Pennington and Alice j Day Archie L. Mayo directed. i THE REV. McLEOD FAVORS MOTION PICTURES I I The Rev. Wm. Murdoch McLeod,! of Pinehurst, appearing at the an.! nual convention of theatre owners in ! that city, is a great believer in the potentialities of the motion picture, and spoke with intensity and fervor in opposition to the- censorship of motion pictures. He said that some ministers had written him opposing j his stand in the matter, but that he I believed the bulk of ministerial j thought was fast coming to realize the vast potentialities of the motion > picture for good in the community I and to have faith in the medium and j in those who are directing its des- j tinies. I The motion picture has long since bee?.me recognized as one of the greatest educational as well as en tertaining features of modern life and fortunate is the small city which has a first-class motion picture thea-1 tre. Forest City is to be congratulat-1 ed upon having two theatres, both! of which present the very best of' motion picture art at all times. TWO INJURED WHEN CAR GOES INTO RIVER Mr. John Allen, son of Mr. Jos Alien, of Forest City, and a Mr. Carver, were injured Sunday when the car in which they were riding skidded on the Buck Shoals bridge; across Broad River, near Cliffside, and crashed through the guard rails i and fell into the river, about thirty' feet below. Mr. Allen was taken to' the Rutherford Hospital, where his"! condition is critical. It is said that the car began skid-; ding as it came on the bridge, and j the driver was unable to get it under control. When near the middle of the bridge the car "went through the guard rails to the bottom of the river.
