Record Vote Cast In Democratic Primary pjr&t Election Under New Balloting System— Republicans and Democrats Cast Votes in Saturday's Primary. « * t L - the first time under the! . ~,-ovtv balloting laws, approximat- 1 on; Democrats went to the polls | , t their vote in Saturday sj y. Rutherford Jpunty's, fijstj .Miean primary was also held at! same time, and some 1,100 re-j icon- east their ballots for state j ■ nator and solicitor. The unpreced- I tnud number of votes cast was a j surprise in all quarters. While much t rivalry had been shown between can- j didates for United States senate and J sheriff's office, political observers had forecast, a county vote of less ? than 4.000. As it was approximately -100 more Democrats voted Satur-« ray than did in the primary two j l years ago. j The election passed quietly in all. parts of the coiinty. Contrary to general belief and expectation, there j v. as but little confusion shown in j voting under the new system. The iew system slowed up voting in some of the larger precincts, but no confusion lresuljed f except 5n one precinct. Leads Ticket. W. O. Geer, candidate for re-i i lection to the office of register of | reeds, headed the county Democratic | i'eket, receiving 4090 votes. A total of 1 2497 votes was required to nominate ' .in Saturday's primary. Considerable interest was shown in the Democratic state ticket, as well as in the county offices. A total of 5113 voters cast ballots for United; States senator, while 5080 voted for , solicitor and candidates for United' States congress from the Tenth Dis- ! trict. ) Much Interest Shov^n. Much interest was shown through cut the day by voters. The republican machinery worked in good order, as ! tvidenced by the number of votes j cast for James Dockery, republican j candidate for solicitor, as compared I "with the votes of his two opponents, j The returns were received Satur- j ( ' a y night by Mr. J. FOREST CITY COURIER FOREST CITY—"ONE OF THE TEN BEST PLANNED AND MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES TM TIII.- „ " - V S :J M S - DEPARTMENT-OF AGRICULTURE STmvpv - NO FILLING STATIONS FOR UNION TOWNSHIP An interesting bit 0 f informa tion has been released by the Census Bureau of this: district —Union township does not a single filling station within its bounds'. One exchange, com menting on this fact, says "That's one for Ripley in this day when there is a filling sta tion at every cross roads and on every corner." This bit of infor mation doesn't indicate, by any means, that Union township is a 'backward' or remote town ship. Union has a population of 946 people, with 168 farms, ranking in both classes as tenth among the fourteen townships. The township showed a substan tial gain over 1920. The entire district is a rich farming com munity, ranking among the most productive sections of the coun ty. Its fine schools and churches, as well as its many comfortable and luxurious farm homes are easily accessible over good roads, for the most part topsoiled. Numbered among its fine citi zenship are some of Rutherford county's most, progressive, pros perous and outstanding citizens. Simpson, H. H. Tucker and W. G. Harris are entitled to a second race if they so desire*. In the event of a seeond primary, it will be held on Saturday, July 5. Candidates have until Friday of this week to file for' a second race. No Opposition. The democratic candidate for state legislature, O. R. Coffield, had no opposition. Mrs. Minnie F. Blanton, candidate for county treasurer, and members of the county board of edu cation were unopposed. By an act of the last legislature the county re corder and the solicitor of the record ers court will be appointed by the board of county commissioners in - stead of by popular vote. __ OFFICIAL COUNTY VOTE, DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY, RUTHERFORD COUNTY, JUNE 7th | DeTa."
