Hoyle, Jr., pastor j of the Rutherfordton Methodist J church, will conduct the noontide devotional services. The district includes the counties of Polk, Rutherford, McDowell and parts of other counties. More than i 250 delegates are expected to attend. An instructive program will be giv _; en. i An attendance banner will be j awarded for the society having the largest nlimber present. Rutherford ton won it last year. Snipes filled his regular appointment Sunday at Golden Valley Methodist church with a good sermon. Mrs. Avery McCurry still remains in a very serious condition, we are sorry to note. Mr. J. D. Houser and family, spent Su'nday at Spindale, visiting their children. Mr. Roosevelt Hunt leaves today (Monday) for Boone where he will i attend the summer school. i I Messrs Arthur Brandle and sons, j Clyde and Floyd, Will, Frank and j Robert Freeman spent Sunday at j Morganton, Glenn Alpine, and Bridge ] water. Mother of Mrs. Ed i Dorsey Dies! I Shelby, June 9.—Mrs. Lizzie Rol-1 lins, widow of D. C. Rollins, died at i 3:45 o'clock Thursday afternoon in, South Shelby where she had made her home for many years with her ■ daughter, Miss Mamie Rollins. She j was 80 years of age and had been sick for three weeks. Mrs. Rol lins before marriage was Miss Lizzie Thomas and spent most of I l:er life at Lawndale and Shelby, j Her husband preceded her to the 1 ' grave three years ago. j •» The funeral was conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock from J the residence by Rev. TOMATO SALAD LEOPOLD— Soak two-thirds box gelatine for fifteen minutes in one-half cup cold water. Add to one can strained tomatoes which have simmered fifteen minutes with one teaspoon salt, one teaspoon powdered sugar, a fleck of onion, three cloves and a pinch of thyme. Strain and pour into coffee cups and chill. Remove from molls and place on lettuce leaves. DUNCAN WINS THE JOHN NORRIS LOVING CUP j i i i The annual golf tournament of the j Rutherford Country Club was held • lost week. More players participated,- in the tournament than on any prev- j 1 icus year, which undoubtedly indi-1 cates that golf is continuing to grow ' more popular. ' r - Dr. A. C. Duncan, of Forest City, 1 1 was low medalist, winning the tourna. 1 r>ent and the John Norris loving cup. Dr. Duncan's score for the four. - rounds, or 36 holes, was 150 and Mr. p G A. Williams, of Spindale, was p close second with 153. The drawings have been completed for the match { { play tournament, which is in prog-! 1 rcss this week. ! e It is interesting to note that most every afternoon about 4 or 5 o'clock you can see a score or more players on the course playing the ancient Scottish game. Among this number you usually see several ladies. It is understood that the club is planning t 0 have a tournament for ladies in the very near future and it is hoped that during the present drive for membership (which has been very s?tisfactory) that a considerable number of ladies will be added to the new roster. SALEM NEWS V - Bostic, R-2, June 10.—Rev. J. Hipp filled his regular appointment Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. He preached an inspiring sermon to a large audience. The Salem Sunday school observ ed children's day at Salem. An in teresting program was given by the children of the junior department. Interesting talks were made by Mr. E. N. Washburn, Sr., Mrs. J. E. Hipp Verneli Weast and Mrs. Chalmers Weast on Sunday school work anil missionary work. This community was saddened to learn of the sudden death of Mr. Fay Green, which occurred early Sunday morning in Forest City. Mr. Green is not of the community but has many friends and relatives who ■ regret the loss of this young man. Mrs. Alice Terry Is seriously ill We hope she will soon be out again. Mrs. Hoyle Dobbins spent last week with her father, Mr. M. C. Davis, of Gilkey. Mrs. W. Washburn made a busi ness trip to Montreat, N. C., last {Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. E, N. Price attended the wedding of Miss Alice Woodsides, c.f Statesville, and Mr. John Price of Stoney Point, which occurred Tuesday at the home of the bride's parents, at Loray. The wedding took jlace Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock. Mr. Price is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Price, of Stoney Point, and a brother of Chief Charles R. Price and Corporal A. A. Price, of the lo cal police force. He is a widely known as progressive farmer. He is well known here, having visited here sev eral times. Funeral Held For Miss Lou Shytle Spindale, June 10.—Funeral ser vices for Miss Lou Shytle, aged about 50, were held Tuesday at Wall's Baptist church. Rev. M. M. Huntley was in charge of the service, as sisted by Rev. L. N. Epley, pastor of the Florence Baptist church. In . terment was in the Wall's cemetery. Miss Shytle died at the home of her sister in Spindale, Mrs. H. W. Williams, Monday morning almost suddenly. Mr. John K. Bates Died Monday Gilkey, June IL.—Mr. John Kelly Bates, aged 79, died at his home near here Monday, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock at Union Mills. The funeral was in charge of Rev. J. D. Hunt, assisted by Rev. Mr. Sorrels and Rev. C. C. Matheny. Interment was in the Round Hill cemetery. Mr. Bates is survived by his wid ow, Mrs. Ollie Tate Bates, and five children, as follows: Joe A. Bates, ard Mrs. Sarah McKinney, of Con verse, S. C.; Wilie Bates, of Alex ander; Mrs. William Lancaster, Paw Creek and Mrs. Weldon Padgett, of Spindale. Three sisters survive, Mrs. N. E. Deorgburg, Converse, S. Courtney's Ten Cent Store. one teaspoon mustard, a dash of pepper and paprika, a few grains cayenne and one teaspoon vinegar. Beat thoroughly. Add one and a half cups salad oil, a tablespoon at a time. Beat thoroughly after each tablespoon until a half cup of the oil has been added and the dressing is thick. When all the oil has been added, add six teaspoons lemon juice and five teaspoons \inegar. PIMENTO CABBAGE SALAD— Add one-fourth cup vinegar to one tablespoon flour, one-half teaspoon dry mustard, one-half teaspoon salt and one tablespoon sugar. Place in a small saucepan over the fire for a few moments, without letting it come to a boil. Then slowly add one cup diluted evaporated milk, stirring constantly until the mix ture thickens. Boil for one minute and remove from fire. Add two tablespoons salad oil, a dash of onion juice, and one can of pimento chopped fine. Mix thorough> and serve with shaved cabbage. CUCUMBER ASPIC SALAD— Peel and chop fine one cucumber. Season with salt and pepper. Let stand a half hour in four table spoons warm vinegar. Add two tablespoons lemon juice and one third cup sugar to one-quarter cup boiling water. Mix with the liquid drained from the cucumbers. Pour into the hot mixture two table spoons of gelatine that have beer, soaked for a few minutes in a half cup of cold water. Add. a drop at a time, green vegetable coloring until you have the color desired. Cool and strain through cheesecloth over the chopped cucumber. Place in a mold that has been chilled in cold water. Keep in refrigerator until firm. Garnish with cream cheese balls and serve on crisp lettuce leaves with French dressing. AN APPRECIATION. To The Voters of Rutherford County: I am deeply grateful for the splen did note of confidence given me in the primary last Saturday, and wish to express my appreciation foi the support of my friends, and the splen did work they did in my behalf. Many of my friends have urged me to call a second primary, as suring me that I would be on e of the three high men in that count. How ever, my investigation discloses that the expense to Rutherford County of a second primary would be at least one thousand dollars. I find also that there is some sentiment against a second primary, because of the usual hard contests. At the outset of my campaign I announced my policy would be to save the county every unnecessary expense. After giving the matter careful consideration I am convinced that I can better serve the Demo cratic Party and Rutherford County, by avoiding the bitterness usually engendered, and at the same time there will be a considerable expense saveo the county. While under the law I am entitled to call a second primary, under the cir cumstances outlined above, I will not do so, but will be before the people again two years from now unless prevented by circumstances and con ditions beyond my control. Upon their return they will make their home with the groom's mother, near Forest City. The bride is the attractive daught tr of Mrs. R. S. McCluney, while the groom is the son of Mrs. J. F. , Daniel. He holds a position with the Florence Mills and is an energetic and popular young man. MR.
