I j The pup goes to Renn Drum, of i the Cleveland Star, for the best ■ Hoover joke (or fact) this week. In his column, "Around our Town" he i says: I i "Last week, according to William ' Leslie's column in the Morganton News-Herald, a man walked in a store there and asked for a pair of Hoover overalls. ( | "Last week it seems several per sons were gathered at Mr. Kemp Kendall's tailor shop telling pros perity jokes. Mr. Kendall or some cf those present declared that Hoover, after all, was a sociable fel low. "He is so fond of fishing him self that it appears as if he wants us all to enjoy his favorite sport and has made conditions so that irost of us have nothing to do but fish." A Republican, it is said, was a member of the group and the statement brought a retort from him: "Say what you will about Mr. Hoover, but I give him credit for do ing one thing for me that no other president or human has ever done —he's taught me to like cabbage ir. the summer time." Hodge Rutherfordton, July 28.—Mrs. Adline Payseur Hodge, widow of the late Joe Hodge, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Daisy Martin near the Seaboard depot Sun day morning, July 20, about five o'clock after an extended illness. Fun eral services were held at the home Monday morning, July 21, at ten o'clock with her pastor, Rev. E. B. Jenkins in charge of the services and interment followed in the Ruth erfordton cemetery. Besides Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Hodge leaves five grandchildren, three brothers, Messrs. C. and George Payseur of Lancaster, S. C.; Jeff Fayseur of Lincolnton and one sis ter, Mrs. Jennie Koone, also of Lincolnton. Mrs. Hodge would have been 85 years old Nov. 6th, 1930, as she was born in 1845. She married Mr. Joe Hodge on Aug. 15, 1880. Soon afterwards she joined the Baptist church and was a faithful member until the end. She was a member here at the time of her death. She was a native of Lincoln county, but has made Rutherford her home for many years. Her husband died in 1922. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends and relatives. An Episcopal rector while spend ing his vacation roughing it in the mountains of north Georgia, became somewhat lonesome for some of his own religious faith, and sighting a cabin in the distance, approached it and inquired of the woman at home if she knew of any Episcopalians in that vicinity. "Wall, mister," she replied, "I couldn't tell you, for John does all the trappin' of varmints aborit. here, but you can go back to the stable where he nails up their hides and see what you can find."—Pathfinder.
