It is only by a careful, sys | j tematic examination that > one can ' [ find all the faults of a bird. ! "Before selecting the birds to be ? J entered, place the males in indivi dual coops and the females either in ' these individual coops or small group coops," advises C. F. Parris, extension • poultryman at State college. "Those having many birds to condition may . | equip a building for the purpose though most small exhibitors use tem : porary quarters. The important [thing is to have the birds where they jmay be handled easily at any time i without the possibility of making jthem wild or breaking the plum : jage." j Mr. Parrish does not advise force j feeding to get the birds in shape, j There are times, however, when a | few extra ounces of flesh may turn j j a decision in a bird's favor. Extra [feeding may also help to develop a \ better plumage. The best way to go [ about getting these desirable attri j butes is in the the addition of a more j concentrated and palatable feed to jthe regular ration. j Every bird to be exhibited should be taught to pose, says Mr. Parrish. , This takes time and must be care fully done. Do not give up with first failures or be satisfied with a poor | pose. Talk to the bird, rub it and J.feed from the hand. In this way the jbird gains confidence and associates i feeding with the hand, j Practically all white birds are • washed before exhabiting. One that jfcas not been washed loolcs out of place fin strong competition. Fojur tubs are needed to do this effective ly. In the first, the water-must be warm and plenty or soap suds used. This is rinsed off in gradually cooler water in- the other three tubs with bluing added to the last one. After washing, allow the bird to stand in a dripping coop for 30 minutes be fore going into the exhibition coop dry completely. HILL-BLAKE.
