During the past year the boresr City Kiwanis Club has accomplish ed much in sponsoring constructive measures for the city and county. The Kiwanis motto, "We Build" ha : been kept in mind, and the club has steadily pushed forward, accomplish ing many of the objects which had been set as a goal. Mr. Howard Dog gett gave a brief outline at the meet ing Monday evening, December 2!>. touching upon the work of the Club. Among the matters mentioned by him were: During the year joint meeting* have been held with, the Rutherford ton Kiwanis Club;, the. ffemnetta- Caroleen Lions Club, the Tryon Ki . wanis club and the County Club, , Textile Club and Rutherfordton Ki |wanis Clubs. The Lions Club were, t-entertained here once by the local club, and a joint meeting was held with them at Cliffside. Av joint meet ing was held in Tryon with- that club, and the Tryon club held ono meeting here with the local clubi A joint meeting was : held; with' the Rutherfordton Kiwanis club, the County Club and the Lions- club j at Rutherfordton,- while the Ruther fordton Kiwanis club held a joint meeting here. « Special entertainment features have been Farmers' night. Ladies* night and Teachers' flnd Ladies' night. A picnic was given for the Kiwanians by the farmers at Mr. Doggett's farm last summer, and the Kiwanis club later-iield a special meeting for the farmers. The club has sponsored several worth-while events in the city. A.- mong them were the National Music week, the cotton contest, the Isaac Walton League's drive for re-estab lishing license sales in county; "sec ond Monday" or Trade Day; debt paying checks and erected air marker. The club jointly sponsored a farmer's tour to the C°ker farms at Hartsville. The air marker v has been painted on the Hewitt build ing, opposite the post office. Dr. A. C. Duncan brought the attention of the club to Babson's idea. of. circula-t. ■tiorr -debt paying checks, and there has recently been put into circula tion a number of certified! checks for -$5.00, which require twenty-frvv signatures before cashing at the bank. It is estimated that by thrs method several thousand dollars in debts will be paid. The club-was ac tive in sponsoring Trade Day, or Second Monday here, and part of the program included the placing of large signs in front of each busi ness house advertising specials' for each Second Monday.. The Kiwanis club has co-operat- Ed with the city in placing Christ mas decorations; beautifying the city for the Christmas holidays; co operated with the Family Welfare Association; Armistice Day celebra tion and with the authorities in the establishment of a star route from Marion to Shelby. The beautifying >f the city at Christmas tinue has brought forth many comments from i visitors and newspapers.; awr the j entire state, and has givenr the city ' much valuable publicity adver ! tising. The club rendered: much vat- j uable assistance in the recent Arm-! ; istice Day celebration, while the ! whole hearted support «f the Wel jfare Association, by the club, makes j the work of the charttjy organization j I easier.
