The Cliffside News The Cltffside News is published •sch week in connection with The Forest City Courier. B. E, ROACH EDITOR METHODIST, CHURCH NOTES. Church services Sunday, March • t 15, 1931. Sunday school 9:45 a. m., church service at 11:00 a. m., and Epwojth League at 6:15 p. m. All services have fallen off of late. Sickness, bad weather and plain neg lect. We wish to call to the minds of all church members that as Christ ians we take upon ourselves the res ponsibility of Christ-like living. When we take the vows of church member ship promising "faithfully to keep its rules, attend 'jts services, be loy al to its doctrines and government and support its institutions." Pastors attend services, prepare sermons regardless of sickness arid petty excuses that the average mem bers have. Those who have failed to j attend have certainly missed some valuable information which was pre pared for them. A person's loyalty to his church will go far beyond loy alty in speech and outward relations. Loyalty to the church and a whole souled effort to make it more truly the medium through which Christ's spirit and life and teachings may be given to all the world. Do we ever stop to think what our absence from church services mean? Friends, what your absence does:. Your absence made someone think i you a pretender. Your absence weak-! ened the effort of the service. Your absence caused others to stay away from the house of God. Your absence makes it harder for you to meet your daily temptations. Your absence encouraged the habit of non-church going. , . , It is hoped these few remarks will cause we who are getting careless to think and then to think of the ' advantages of church attendance. Your presence caused people to' have confidence in you. Your pref er ce encouraged and helped the minister in his work. Your presence caused others to come to the house God. Your presence makes your life stronger for another week. Your presence removed the stumbling block from sinner's paths. Friends lets attend our services regularly for the church "gives gifts | that gold cannot buy, nor kings take j away." Among the sick at present are Mrs. Hoyle Lovelace, Miss Annabella Logan who is at her home at Rut.h erfordton, Mr. E. D. Crocker, Miss Amanda Haynes teacher at Avon dale is at home here ill. Several classes and organizations held meetings last week. On last Thursday night the Berean Bible class of young men with their toach er, Mr. Jesse Honneycutt hold a business meeting at the Memorial building with a fine attendance and a splendid spirit of fellowship and co-operation. They will .hold their business meetings on week days, or nights so that all the time may be given on Sunday mornings to the study of the lesson. Friday night, under the leader ship of Mrs, B. P. Caldwell, Mrs. D. C. Whitalcer and Miss Pamelia Pruett the Girls' Auxiliary had a de ! lightful social meeting at *the- R. R. Haynes Memorial ; building. A num ber of invited friends were also pres ent and after, asocial hour filled with interesting indoor games, contests, etc., refreshments were served. Last Sunday morning was very cold and an icy wind blowing a gale that felt as if it was fresh from the arctic regions. Yet the attendance was pretty good. We had around 400 present with six visitors and eleven new members enrolled. Our pastor Rev- James Allen Hunnicutt and his family have been with us one year and last Sunday morning a brief summary of the year's work was given. It was a very encouraging report. In many respects it has been a hard year. We are all quite aware of the depres sion that has hampered the work yet there are many J members who are still putting the I church first and the treasurers report | Sunday for the month of February j was very encouraging. Our pastor and his good wife have been untiring in their splendid work throughout the past year since their coming to us and results are evident in all phases of the work. During the past year there has ! been 187 additions to the church and >ll3 of these by baptism. | One B. Y. P. U. course with 138 1 enrolled and 117 taking awards. Lat er other courses have been' given and 64 other awards received, Mak- I ing a total of 171 awards in the B. Y. P. U. study work. Recently the B. Y. P. U's. have been reorganized starting with a new enrollment, through those who have not been regular are still on a list to be won. The enrollment at present is 199. | A two weeks school of music was j held during the summer with an aver age of 426 in daily attendance. A Sunday school training school was held with 82 enrolled. 37 King's Teacher diplomas were awarded, 21 seals and 12 church administration diplomas. Later 47 other seals have i been awarded for other study cours- j es in Sunday school work, making a Kblished in Connection With The Forest City Courier (total of 110 awards in the Sunday ' school work. In the W. M. U. school of Mis sions there were 82 enrolled and each one received the award. This was a ; 100 per cent school. There are 272 in the W. M. U. and the Auxiliary organizations. New B. Y. P. U's. have .1 # been organized and two new circles ; in the W. M. U. ! $1,000.00 has been paid on the j indebtedness of the church and the report for last month was better than usual and indicates that the peo ple of the church are becoming more and more -interested in its welfare. In February a little more than one thousand dollars was contributed and the interest on two notes paid for three months and the principal reduced four hundred dollars more. Because of the fine loyalty of the j large number of-members who, in j some cases have really sacrificed for the church, the treasury of the church has not been quite empty at any time during the year. Since our recent Sunday school revival and enlargement campaign the work has taken on new life and several new classes have been or ganized to take care of the enlarg ed organization. By screening one end of the kitchen, hanging suitable pictures and making a few othei changes a delightful class room was made for the sixteen year old girls of the intermediate department. We had thought all the space of our 1 church utilized until it became neces- j sary to find more room. By the use ; of screens several classes found j places in the assembly rooms of the , departments. Another new class was ! formed last Sunday and are meeting in the rear of the main auditorium. , The class of young married men re cently organized" and taught by the pastor has a nice place fitted up in the balcony. These are only a few of the things that have been accomplished during the past year and we are looking forward with keen anticipation to greater things. We have splendid leadership and if we only do our part thlere is no reason why the church should not make great progress. The subject Sunday morning was "the present emergency," and the pastor brought a fine message. We were delighted to have Messrs. Gaither Humphries of near Gaffney with us and he and Mr. Howard Hawkins sang a beautiful duet. At the close of the service Mrs.. Lee Putman was received into the church by letter. We welcome her to the church and its work. Several members of the B. Y. P. U's. attended the meeting at High Shoals Sunday afternoon and report a fine meeting. The R. C. S. Union won the banner Sunday evening and presented a fine program which the pastor asked them to repeat at the I a Good resolution All-Weather Tread $ su- I ( - 0 y W M _ Jee gripping blocks are pfcced in the center of 'DU&' , 3l EggHßto lwill buy oftm. of your hand upon this llnraßl^lnili^ blocks°g rip^a nd°pi nch ''M / 7\ CI? £A £mmk the flesh.'
