The semi-annual session of the Kings Mountain Presbytery opened Tuesday morning, April 21, at Brit tain church. Rtiring Moderator Rev. R. J. Hunter preached the in troductory sermon from First ( Peter, 56th verse, "The Mighty Hand of God." He gave comforting assurance in these times of turmoil and change. Revs. G. W. Mickel of Cherryville and J. K. Hall of Goshen church presided and dispensed with the Com munion. j Dr. H. N. McDiarmid of Shelby, read a splendid memorial to the j late Dr. Isaac Stuart McElroy, D. D., father of Rev. I. S. McElroy, j pastor of the Rutherfordton Pres- i byterian church. Dr. McDiarmid was elected Moderator of the Pres bytery, after which the body ad journed for lunch which was serv ed by the ladies of the church in the old dining room of Westmins ter school. j In the afternoon the Presbytery had its usual experience of being invited to five different churches fcr the next session and decided to meet with Unity church in Gaston county, which has a new house o1 worship. • A number of overtures to the General Assembly, meeting in Maj at Montreat, touching various im portant matters came up. ! Discussing the question of danc ing at Davidson college, which has been agitated recently in certain church papers, the Presbytery took firm action opposing dances under auspices of church schools, or 01- ganizations of church schools. At the evening session Home Mission work of the Presbytery was discussed by Rev. D. M. McGeachy of Tryon, and Rev. W. T. Smith of Unity church. The Home Mission report carried an expression of deep appreciation of the faithful service and interest in Home Mis sions of the late C. E. Neisler of Kings Mountain, a member of this, ! Rev. T. C. Bryan of the First Presbyterian church, Gastonia, was elected temporary secretary. Wednesday ussed various things of interest to the work of the church . The at tendance was good at both days. The people of Brittain displayed unusual hospitality to the delegates. The Presbytery covers five counties. Rutherford, Polk Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln. i Wednesday morning Dr. W. S Wilson of Lincolnton, preached an able sermon on the "Personality of God." . Rev. T. M. Stribilng, new pastor at Spindale and Forest City, was received as a member of the Pres bytery. i Every pastor and every church in the Presbytery was represented. The Presbytery adjourned at 1 p. m. Wednesday. It was a profitable session. —- DR. FOSTER A. SONDLEY I SUCCUMBS AT ASHEVILLE Asheville, April 20. —Dr. Foster j A. Sondley, 73, one of western; North Carolina's most distinguished j lawyers and historians, died at 11 o'clock Friday morning at his home j in the Haw Creek valley on the outskirts of Asheville. Death followed an illness of less than 20 hours. He was stricken with pneumonia Thursday night and com plications developed shortly after 2 o'clock Friday morning. Dr. Sondley was recognized as one of the outstanding historians of westei-n North Carolina. He served sometime as a member of the North Carolina Historical Commission, and was the author of several interest ing monographs on western North Carolina history. Cliffside Boy Is British Contributor Mr. William Allhands, of Cliff- side, is a contributor to "Doggy' Tales," published recently by The I Mitre Press, of London, England. This book carries a number of short stories by contributors from all over the world. Mr. Allhands has the dis tinction of being the only contribu tor from the United States to this interesting book, which is meeting with a splendid reception throughout the British Empire and elsewhere. Aged Woman Dies On Birthday | Rutherfordton, R-4, April 27. — Mrs. Nancy Louise Freeman Baber died at her home at Logan Station, j April 14th, on her 85th birthday j She was sick about six days. I The funeral service was conduct led at Cedar Grove Methodist : church by Rev. R. T. Baker, who | was assisted by Rev. J. N. Snow. The Mt. Vernon choir sang sev ■ eral beautiful, selections. The flow er girls were granddaughters as fol jlows: Misses Wileen and .Beth j Baber, Mary Kate and Daisy Deck, i'Mrs. H. H. Freeman and Mrs. Clif ton Bridges. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Glenn and Bill Deck, Car die and Spurgeon Freeman, Clifton Bostic and Hunter Biggerstaff. On October 23, 1866 she was united in marriage to William 0. Baber. To this union eight child ren were born. Seven of whom survive her, one having died in in fancy. The children are: J. G. Baber, Bostic; W. A. Baber, Ellen boro; S. M. Baber and B. C. Baber, Rutherfordton, R-4; O. R. Baber, Montrose, Ga.; Mrs. A. W. Deck, Rutherfordton, R-4, and Miss Ina Baber, Rutherfordton, R-4. Her husband preceded her to the grave thirty-three years ago. Eighteen grandchildren survive her and eleven great grandchildren. She is also survived by four broth ers, D. D. Freeman, Bostic; W. M. Freeman, Forest City; Henderson Freeman, Marietta, Okla.; and T. R. Freeman, Bostic. Three broth ers preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Baber joined Lebanon Baptist church in early girlhood and was a member of this church at her death. She was a noble Christian woman and we rejoice with her loved ones in the assur ance she had of eternal life. Her funeral was attended by a large crowd of sorrowing friends and rel atives. Her grave in the Cedar Grove cemetery was covered with many beautiful flowers. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Deck and family. She en joyed a wide circle of friends and relatives.
