"THE ROCK OF DECISION" BY BERTHA B. MOORE "The Rock of Decision," by Bertha jB. Moore, formerly of South Moun j tain Institute, published this year by •Wm. B. Erdman's Publishing Com | pany, is a book in which the "mount j aineer" and his home life is por ! trayed with rare intuition and sym ! pathy. It is full of the color and beauty of the mountains and only a ! person who has lived and worked ' among these stalwart people could depict in such a realistic way the joys and sorrows as they occur in the every day life of these moun tain folk. The scene is laid in and around 1 South Mountain Institute and the ! characters are men, women and chil- I dren with whom the author is inti | mately acquainted. There, we have . the secret of the very personal ap ; peal of the story. | Miss Moore has dedicated her j book "To You Who Have Introduced i Pheobe To Me." Phoebe, of course, is the heroine, a 14-year-old girl, the oldest, but one, of 12 children. As iwe follow the Story of this beautiful i girl's life —old beyond her years. .• | burdened for her poor overworked j j mother and shouldering the respon-j ! sibility of her younger brothers and i I sisters, bullied by a drunken father, j ; we do not wonder that she was un-i ! certain of God's existence and His j . power to help her. It is interesting to see the in fluence of the school and its Christ ian workers as they came to touch i the lives of this family and finally! of the surrounding community. Af- j ter many hardships Phoebe graduat- •. Ed from the school and became one j jof the bright lights of the settle- 1 ment, finding her places there as a, teacher of Domestic Science. She; was able to lift the burden of j family and to see her father convert-, ed. She herself was led to see the , light and pledged her troth to as young student whose ambition was to finish the seminary and come back j to the mountains to preach. The rock of decision was the scene of many of Phoebe's joys and sorrows and it is here we leave her at the close of the book. MRS. CARL HUNTLEY, ! Librarian, Forest City Library. THE FOREST CITY (N.
