STATE NEWS Col. W. W. Phifer, a city offi cial of Charlotte, died suddenly in that city July 22, aged 64 years. A Sunday school has been or ganized at the State Sanatorium for Tuberculosis, and the. patients are said to be much ii.terested in the exercises. Three old negro women of Wil mington will soon come into pos session of $20,000, left them by an old slave who ran away and went to Chicago and made a for tune there. Huckleberries to the value of $42,000 have bjen shipped from Mount Olive, the average price per crate being $2.75, about $2 being clear money to the pickers on each crate. 'A two-headed goat is reported in Concord. The animal was born a few days ago and has four eyps, four ears, two noses and two mouths. Otherwise the goat is normal. The newly created juvenile court at Asheville wa3 opened July 21. Four negro boys are the first "customers" of the new tribunal. This court is the first result of the effort in North Car olina to differentiate the cases of youthful delinquents from those of adult and hardened criminals. A. W. McLean, acting Nation al committeeman to raise North Carolina's proportion of the fund to carry on the organization work of the party, who was asked to raise about $2,000, has all of that amount with the exception of $100. He does not anticipate any trouble in collecting this small amount. Six years ago little Lucian Had ley Stark, of Wilson, then an in fant, swallowed a safety pin. Ef forts to remove the pin were un availing, and yet the child did not seem to show any distressing symptoms. Recently the little fellow complained of pain in the left side and last week was taken to the Wilson sanatorium, where Drs. Dickenson and Williams per formed an operation, finding the pin swallowed six years ago. The child is doing well. Govertor Locke Craig left Ashe ville July 24 for a trip of two weeks, which will be spent in Ohio and Pennsylvania, announc ing that at the close of the trip he will return to Raleigh to take up his duties at the State Capitol. While away he will make several public addresses, having accept ed invitations to appear at sev eral cities of the States named. During the absence of the Gov ernor, Lieutenant Governor E. L. Daughtridge. of Edgecomb coun ty, will be the acting Governor occupying the executive office. There is no race suicide in North Carolina. According to the figures issued by the State Board of Health the births for the month of June exceeded the deaths for the same time by near ly fifty percent. The actual fig ures reported under the vital sta tistics law show that the births for the month were 6,753, while the deaths for the same time were 3,535. This is decidedly above the yearly average. The annual death rate is 14.4 per thou sand, while the birth rate is 18.4 per thousand. Raleigh News and Observer. Jim Cameron, the negro who killed Blue of Aberdeen several months ago, and who was to have been electrocuted last Friday, was reprieved by Governor Craig ior 30 days longer. Cameron was from Lee county and h-.d f-ome land in Broadway. The Blue children sued Cameron for damages for killing their father j ist as they would have done a railroad, and th court gave a verdict in their favor. So Cam eron's interest in the land was sold at the court house on Mon day, the 6th, which brought $600, and the money goes to the Blue estate for his children. South ern Advocate. , GENERAL NEWS. During a strike riot in St. Pe tersburg, Russia, last week five strikers were killed by Cossack troops. A traveling salesman gave a 10-cents tip to a hotel porter in Jackson, Miss., last week and was fined $6 for violation of the new anti-tipping law. The re cipient of the tip was similarly fined. Secretary of War Garrison an nounces that the Panama Canal will be opened to the commerce of the world on August 15 next. It is stated that the War Depart ment vessel Christobal will prob ably be the first craft to pass through the canal. Temporary receivers for the H. B. Clan" in Co., New York, which failed a month ago, report the firm's assets as being $52,876,354 and its liabilities $44,842,253. It is said that all claims will event ually be paid in full. Bandits held up a passenger train four miles from New Or leans last Friday night and killed the brakeman. They secured only $5 before they fled. The same night near Los Angeles, Cal., train robbers secured $2,000 and escaped. The body of Mrs. Stanley Pap ka, 23, who three weeks ago be came a bride against her wish, was found in a well near her home, at Williamsport, Pa., last week. The girl had married be cause it was the desire of her pa rents. Police authorities believe she committed suicide. i Mai sovereign grand commander of Scottish Rite Masons, Southern jurisdiction, died in Murfrees boro, Tenn., July 24, aged 71 years. He had been a member of the Masonic order 47 years, and was well known and highly esteemed by Masons throughout the country at large as well as in his own official territory. John Schrank, who attempted to assassinate Col. Roosevelt in Milwaukee in October, 1912, prob ably never will be tried on the charge of assault with intent to kill. Judge A. C. Buckus, of the municipal court, has received word from physicians in the criminally insane department of the State prison at Waupon, Wis., that Schrank is steadily growing worse from a mental standpoint. The curiosity of the United States Senate has cost it $40,000 a year for the last foui years. During that time it has held a score or more investigations. They have compassed everything from the cost of living to the cost of being elected to the United States Senate ; from the needs of the people of Alaska to the! causes of the sinking of the Ti tanic. The bill totals $163,000. Four snakes, 18 tarantulas, 70 rats, enough roaches to almost fill a barrel, and millions of bed bugs formed part of the cargo of a freight vessel, sailing tropical seas and which was fumigated in New Orleans last week in con nection with the fight against bu bonic plague. Two of the snakes were boa-constrictors more than five feet long. Two others were of a harmless Central American variety: Final agreement on a bill to tax out of existence so-called gambling transactions in cotton futures was reached last week by House and Senate conferees. Under the measure all futures contracts which do not provide f'T delivery of spinnable cotton of a designated quality under stur.dards to be established by the Department of Agriculture would be subject to a tax of $10 per bale. No tax would be imposed on futures transactions which come within these requirements, or in trading in spot cotton.
