ST THE liOANOKE-CHOWAN TIMES, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1904. The Peruvian's Sacred Number. The Peruviana cared nothing lor any of the supposed - mystic properties of either three, five or ' seven. To them the four was sacred, and around it they en ; twined the main features of all x their religious ceremonies and queer beliefs.: They believed the earth to be a sqnare divided into four parts and suspended from .-the heavens by four crds one -J. Parker, the be loved wife of Cornelius Parker, was born near Seaboard, North ampton County, N. C, Feb. 14th 1841, died August 9th, 1904, at one o'clock P. M. and therefore was 63 years, 5 months 25 days old. She was converted and con nected herself with the Baptist church when quite young. Dur her life she was one of the best members of Mount Carmel church; she was a consecrated, pure christian ; woman,, full of , good works and-christian graces All say she lived an exemplary Plant Berries for Birds. Last - autumn, when a New ;.York family was seated around y tne Dreasiass table, a young wopdthrush flew into the dining i i room through the open window. . ' It ; was a straggler from a flock '-. on its way south. Weary, hun- : gry and faint with travel, it S alighted on the frame of a pict are, . which, by a strange and " beautiful coincidence, was one of Audubon's old " prints.; Some , branches of bright alder berries . happily stood in a vase on the ' , 'mantel below. Fear was instant V, ly forgotten in the joy of feast- ing. After a hearty meal of the j t 1 amiliar fruit and deep draughts h of water from a cup ; placed near ; . the berries, the thrush departed S';. as " it camey but refreshed for its : travels. If this denizen of the ' " woods could forget its natural ' shyness under such unnatural ' conditions, how much more read ily will invitations to feast be ac , ,cepted in the open air? Prom ", Blanchan's "How. to Attract '- JBirds.'" ' " ' ? life from the very day shjgave her young heart to the Lord and joined . the church. - God only knows tne real value oi sucn a woman as she. Her place will be hard to fill. Her life was one of beauty and mildness. She was a great sufferer; for more than ten weeks she was confined to her bed "and during that time was never known to murmur but al ways : said lioa s will oe done, and seemed perfectly resigned and wanted to so and be with her Suviour. Sbe was constant m prayer on her bed of affliction giving prais es to God, whom she knew would soon ; release her from pain and take her unto Himself. The sad new of her death brought pro- bund sorrow to a large number of -' people and friends, for her beautiful christian : character, genial manners and sweetness of disposition made it impossible to know her without highly esteem ing ,ner; in iact sne was one oi the purest, sweetest, truest of women it has been my privilege to be associated with, ever ready to sacrifice her own convenience and pleasure . to minister to the wishes of others. Whenever a-.d wherever there was sorrow and affliction tnere she might belound, with her own hands nursing and speaking words of consolation. So meek and trusting, an air of humility seemed to pervade the atmos phere she breathed. She was possessed of so happy a disposi tion she inspired in others. W e shall miss her from her accustom ed place in Mount Carmel church; she was always in church when it was possible for her to be there. For . the sake of the bereaved and stricken husband who need ed -heT ministrations sa sorely, and the. two dear boys she was ever serving with a devotion and tenderness which 'mothers nly can bestow, human reason says tkat she ought not to 'have died But one fully realizes that the weakness of God is stronger than men, and that his afflic tions are sent in love and mercy, therefore we must accept this vis-, itation of His providence with out" question, confident that to the eye of faith its object and purpose will sooner or later be fully explained a- d justified. Her funeral was preached by Rev E i E. Rose of the M. E church, at her home in the pres ence " of a large and sorrowing crowd. - She was buried in the i family burying ground at home. Hearts that loved her so deep ly are leit sad and oroicen, out some sweet day tne clouds oi gloom and sorrow will be dispell ed and God will reveal the blessed truth that what seemed to be their loss was her eternal gain. 0 merciful God! Father of the motherless in pity comfort the bereaved , husband and the two dear boys who survive her and enable them to feel thatit is only in love that thou hast thus de prived them oi the brightest jew el of their earthly home and that wife and mother has only crossed over the river and is waiting for and beckoning to them. Hus band and children, mother-can not come back to you but by the grace of God you can go to her, We tender our sincere sympathy to the bereaved husband and children. M ay God bless them There is but one to comfort and He doeth all things for the best The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. ; C. L.N. S Changed. A rich lady dreamed that she went to Heaven, and there saw a mansion being bailt, ''What is that for?" she asked of the guide " Kor your gnnlner." 'Hut he lives in the tiniest cot tage on earth, with bardy room euough for his family. lie riiight live better, if he did not give away so much to tne miserable poor folks." Farther on she saw a tiny cot tage being built, "and who is that for?" she asked. "That is for you," "But I have lived iu a mansion on earth. I would not know how to live in a cottage." The words she heard in reply were full of meaning.
