This is isne of TSne of the neweat schools in the County but is tak ing its place with .the, mos,t pro gressive. The writer had the pleasure of attending a part of the closing exercises Tuesday of this week and was delighted at the evidences of the good work of the teachers, and hearty coop eration of the patrons of the school. ' The school is in what is known as the Tyler district and is in the Southeast corner of the County, near where Northampton, Bettie and Hertford c6unties join. This was the first year of the school in its new building, and v at the new location and was taught by Mr. Alvah Martin of Conway and Miss Evelyn Elliott of Rich Square. The committee made no mistake in the selection of teachers. The boys and girls gave' evidence of careful train ing and they will be heard from again. Mr. J. T. Flythe delivered the commencement address which was a strong presentation of the value of education. He made it clear that . to be a success the boy Or girl must be trained for the everyday duties of life. This school is beautifully lo cated. The high rolling lands that stretch out in every ' direc tion, and the beautiful fields in plain view make it an ideal loca tion for an ideal rural scnoil. The patrons have good cause to be proud of their school A Fine Road. Work on the Eigletown road is provxesaing nicely, and great imorovem'Jnts are being made. The convict force Is naw at J T. Elliott's Perhaps the greatest improvement in the township is on the road from Woodland to Anneta. This is a beautiful piece of road. . It needs more sand wnich it is intended to supply during the summer. Soon we will have the prettiest fifteen mile drive to be found in the country. The distance from Woodfa.id to Rich Square is six' mi!e3, from here to Anneta six miles, and from Anneta to Woodland three miles. Progressive, thrifty far mers live all along this road. vie ing with each other as to who can raise the finest crops and keep the best stock, and when the road is completed the isola tion will be removed and the farm homes will be viewed daily by 'a number of people who rare ly if ever pasp that way now. An Osculatory Ode. It is related that a pretty girl who does newspaper work wrote this: "The greatest surprise to a girl who gets kissed . for the first time is that there is no taste to it." How she found that out is not related, and it may be in bad form to inquire. However, an old bachelor who has read her unsupported state ment roars back in this form: "No taste to it? By the great hen feather in Cupid's dart, that girl must be color blind in the palate! They tell us those who' have tried . it we have not--that it tastes like double distilled essence of honey spread on pumpkin pie. Away back in the dim and joyful years of long ago, before we lost our teeth and bur cinch in, the beautiful prize, the prettiest girl in all the world told us that it felt like a covey of frightened quail flying out of each ear and ended up with a sensation sitnilar to. that which might be produced by a . flock of angels' pouring a golden stream of molasses down one's back. XX f:-:;kq. Last week there -were perhaps 4 hundred colored men and bova in Rich Square who were under the influence of liquor - and upon enquiry we learned that the drunks were caused by a bever age call fd "meal wine." This was a 'iev one on us, but we are informed that it has been on the market m this part of the S'ate for a long time, and j h mad from corn meal and mo lasses or 3Ui?ar. and is quite ex tensively sold as a beverage. Anything that will produce in toxication seems to find good sale. Perhaps the "meal wine" is no better nor worse than the booze usually shipped here from Virginia. Special Announcements.
