The concert given by the high school girls in the school audito rium last Friday evening was most, enjoyable and could suc cinctly 'be termed a real enter tainment. It consisted of vocal, dramatic and instrumental selec tions. Although no charge was made for the privilege of being one of the audience, refreshments were sold at the close of the con cert programme. Miss Annie Dunning, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. W. G. Mitchell, has returned to her home in Norfolk, Va. Miss Helen Britton was in Winton last Friday attending a session of the Teacher's Conven tion of Hertford County. Many of our people are attend ing Court in Windsor this- week. Mitchell, Jr., spent Sunday in Suffolk as the guests of Mr, and Mrs. M.T. Elliott of that city. The authorities of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Co. have stationed a body of men here for the purpose, of lengthening the south end of the pass track. This will eliminate the difficulty ex perienced by the trainmen in dis patching four or five long freight trains that often meet here. Mr. C.H. Jenkins has reopened the garage on Commerce Street that was formerly occupied by the Aulander V. otor Company. , We are sorry : indeed to report the names of Misses Mary and Blanche Pritchard on the list of the sick this week. One of our citizens, Mr. A. L. Burden, can boast ' of another birthday this year. Mr. Burden was born on one February . 29th. not so many years after the battle of Gettysburg, but he still insists that he is only 14 years old. . Steel Products Advance. , Tnre ha been another ad vance i' iron and steel. products. This week nails, plain and barbed wire, have advanced 10 cents per hundred pounds, and two weeks ago there was a s railar advance. Since last fall wire fencing has ad vanced about three cents a yard at the mills. It looks "like our people will -have to: go back to rail fences. - ' ' 1 Woodland Chowan Club. On Monday evening, February 7th. , the Chowan Club of Wood land met at the home of Mrs. R D. Harrell for its regular busi ness meeting. This club which is a year old now has an enroll ment of 22 enthusiastic workers ' who become more interested at' each meeting. j vIt was decided that we raise' $W0; Within 3 years for the debt j OffChowan College. To help to-; wards this we hope to give sev eral good entertainments in the near future. A discussion fol lowed as to arranging a debate and a committee was appointed for this; Misses Jennie Durkeeand Rose Goodwin of Chowan College are expecting to give a recital here soon, they being unable to fill their engagement on January 13. A letter was read from the bus iness manager of the Columns urging that each member take it, and a committee was appointed to solicit subscriptions. The Club was delighted to have present Mrs. Harrell's house guests, Mrs. John Persons of Norfolk and Miss Mary Thomas of Cofleld. The business being concluded we were then delightfully enter tained, by a musical contest, to which much enjoyment was add ed by Mrs. John Persons playing the' beautiful old time melodies. Mrs. R.'
