LI6BTEMN6 BODS A SEAL PROTECTION Lightning rods, with their aft companyintc air terminals and ground connections, when pro perly installed as a system on a building or other structure, give nearly complete protection from lightning. Statistics from a State such as Iowa, where thunderstorms are frequent, show that more than 95 out of each 100 buildings bus taining fire losses from lightning were not rodded. It is estimated that about 50 per cent of the farm buildings in Iowa are rod ded. Lightning rods, or more pro- perly lightning conductors,' are nearly always made of copper or heavily galvanized iron or steel. the former generally in the form of a Btranded cable, the latter of star cross section twisted into a long spiral. Cooper is somewhat the better in durability. Both kinds of conductor when cor rectly installedfgive satisfactory protection. Copper conductors should weigh noC less than 3 ounces per foot; iron not less than 320 pounds per thousand feet, or a little over 5 ounces per foot, says the Weath er Bureau of the United States Department of Agriculture. Lightning conductors should be attached direct to the surface of a building without insulators. The air terminals to protect up ward-pointing parts cf the roof should be secured against over turning by the wind, and the ground connections extended downward to permanently moist soil, usually found at a depth of 8 or 10 feet below the Burface. All joints should be permanently made and of low electrical re sistance. J. P. Griffin, special wk 48 60 J. P. Griffin, pria. to jail 4.80 Mitchell Printing Co. books for R. of D. 171 38 H. L.
